Update 6.00: War.app!

Warzone has just been updated to version 6.00.0! This update changes the name of the game as previously announced, and also adds a bunch of new features and makes improvements to the game and app. This blog post describes what’s changed.

This update is live now on the website and standalone clients, and will be updated on Android and iPhone apps in the coming week or so.

LD Assist now respects teammates

The Local Deployment Assistant feature that was introduced in the previous update has now been improved to play nicer in team games!

The LD Assist is designed to help aid players playing in local deployment games. It will fill in deployments and transfers as needed to help get your armies to the front lines with fewer clicks.

Prior to this update, LD Assist would not consider paths to opponents that go through your teammates, which led to it making sub-optimal moves. Now, LD Assist will look for the shortest path to an opponent that goes through your teammate, and will also automatically transfer armies to your teammate across that path.

Map Caching

The Unity app now caches maps by default, so they don’t need to be downloaded more than once. This helps eliminate loading times for players who play on the same maps often, especially for players with slower internet connections.

By default, the app will cache the 5 maps that you most frequently use. This can be configured in the settings to either disable it, or to cache more maps.

Caching maps is a trade-off between reducing download times and taking up more storage space on your device. If you have lots of storage space and don’t mind using it, you can increase the cache, but if you’re very limited on space on your device you may want to disable this feature.

This new setting replaces the old “Cache maps on device” checkbox that existed in the settings previously, since that one was either all-on or all-off (and it defaulted off, since storing all maps on the device tends to take up too much space for most people).

Gift and Sanctions cards allow filtering

When playing a gift or sanctions card in a game with at least 6 players, there’s now a filter box that lets you search for the player by name.

This is most useful in very large games, such as if you’re trying to play a sanctions card on another player in a 400-player mega game, it can be difficult to find their name in the list. Now, you can simply type their name or a subset of their name to filter the list down.

Open Games can be filtered by Custom Scenarios

When editing your open game filters in the Unity app, you now have the option to show or hide games that use custom scenarios. Custom scenarios is the feature where the game host can decide, territory-by-territory, who starts where and how many armies they get.

If you browse open games often, filtering on this can be useful if you care strongly about custom scenarios one way or the other.

New Guides

Guides are being integrated into the game which help players understand all of War.app’s features and how they work. They are an improvement over the wiki links that used to exist as they are capable of giving more targeted and accurate information the player is looking for.

With this update, many new wiki buttons were replaced with guides, especially in a game’s Settings panel and the game creation pages.

Additionally, the guides that have an equivilant wiki page now also give a link to the wiki, in case players want to dive further into the topic.

Warzone will be renamed to War.app

Following the settlement with Activision, Warzone now has a new name!

Starting with the next update, Warzone will be known as War.app.

Warzone’s official URL is changing from www.warzone.com to simply war.app. For now, warzone.com links will redirect to the new name, but it’s important that web players update their links to the game, since at some point in 2027 this redirect will stop working.

The name change will go live with the update 6.00.0, which will arrive to web users in the coming days and mobile users in the coming weeks.

Everything else about the game stays the same.

  • Your Warzone account and email/password will still work just as they have.
  • All of your progress and on-going games will stay just as they were.
  • Mobile users do not need to download a new app. The app will stay in the same location on your device and the icon won’t change. Just the name displayed below the icon will change.
  • If you stream the game on twitch after 6.00 is live, you should update the category from Warzone to war.app to ensure your twitch streams continue to be broadcasted on the website. All twitch streamers in the new war.app category will be shown by default, unlike before where streamers had to be approved to avoid conflicts with streamers streaming in the wrong category.

I realize name changes can be disruptive and polarizing. I apologize for any inconveniences caused, but changing the name away from Warzone was necessary. I fully intend for War.app to be the “forever” name so that we never have to go through this again.

I have many plans for the game that were on hold until the name change, so stay tuned for future updates. 2026 will truly be a pivotal year!

The litigation with Activision is over

Warzone and Activision have reached a mutally favorable settlement. While I cannot disclose the terms of the settlement, I have the following important updates to share:

  • Warzone will be renamed to War.app.
  • Warzone will issue a full refund to all contributors to the GoFundMe campaign.
  • At some point in 2027, all warzone.com links will stop directing to the game. Players should update any existing links by replacing warzone.com with war.app. Web players must update their bookmarks to ensure uninterrupted access.

Additional details regarding the name change will be shared in a forthcoming blog post. I sincerely thank the community for its continued support.
