This thread contains a list of mods containing AI generated imagery/text. It is for players to make an informed decision of if they want to join a game that includes a mod with AI. If you want the disclosure to be mandatory, vote for https://war.app/Forum/864717-mods-disclose-ai-imagery .

Mods marked with * means none of the images in the mod are currently detected as AI as per https://sightengine.com/detect-ai-generated-images (not affiliated).

Mods marked with ** means not verified against an AI image detection tool.

Mods:

For all these mods, the project file of their images aren't publicly available.

"Beacon" notable exhibits that suggest use of AI:

There are relative inconsistencies between the images. 1. seems like it should be a base for all other images. In a hand drawn image, layers can be disabled. There would be an exact consistency, regardless of exporting to required image sizes. It seems like all the images were made one by one, rather than using a complete image as a base, disabling unneeded layers and exporting to the required size.

"Behemoth" notable exhibits that suggest use of AI:

Exhibit 1. seems like it was made by an AI image generation model.

There are relative inconsistencies between the images. Open 2. in Inkscape then import 3. and move it to the point 0, 0. Set the opacity of 2. to 70%. Resize 3. until it's the same size as 2. There is misalignment of the tusk on the left side of the image. There is also misalignment of the feet. They are completely different images. There would be an exact match in a human-made image to save time of redrawing.

"Bounty" notable exhibits that suggest use of AI:

The text contains excessive formatting and heavy use of the em-dash. 2. Also makes direct references to using generative AI.

"CardPack - Disasters" notable exhibits that suggest use of AI:

Exhibits 1-4 are all in the style of AI image generation models.

"CardPack - OG" notable exhibits that suggest use of AI:

Exhibit 3. seems like the it's in the style of an AI image generator.

Exhibit 4. has clear white pixel line borders. I'm not convinced that this an intentional design decision. Maybe it's from cutting the image out of another image. An alternative theory is that it seems like a scaled up version of exhibit 2. When a raster image is enlarged from a smaller version, the quality only gets worse - it becomes more pixelated throughout the entire image. But that doesn't happen with AI up-scaling or with vector graphics. When opening exhibit 2 in Inkscape then importing exhibit 4, no matter how I try resizing it, it doesn't do an exact match with exhibit 2. They are two completely different images.

"CardPack-Utility" notable exhibits that suggest the use of AI:

Exhibits 1-3 all clearly resemble the style of AI image generation models. Exhibit 4 is likely cut out from the generated images using Photoshop and that leaves a border around the images.

"Portals v2" notable exhibits that suggest the use of AI:

All are in the style of an AI image generation model. The difference with 3 is that they are cut out of 1. or 2. then had text added.

"Resurrection Card" notable exhibits that suggest the use of AI:

All are in the style of an AI image generation model. Possible visible Gemini watermarks.

I have gone through all mods on https://war.app/Mods/ and these are the clearest. There may be others I missed.

If I wanted to tell Krinid I don't like him, a single sentence would've sufficed. Good luck with your pity crusade!

It is not targeting any mod maker in particular. These just happen to be mods that very likely have AI generated assets.

It's not a "pity crusade". Players should be able to make an informed decision on join games that include mods made with AI.

If you are pro-AI, you should ignore this thread because it isn't for you.

How would you distinguish between freely available clip art as a single image with no layers, also composed into alternate images and resizings, manually edited or otherwise?

But if it makes it easier, just assume all my mods are 100% AI including the code (they’re not) and don’t use them

Tbh for someone who isn’t even active and keeps deleting accounts, I’m confused as to why you continue to be so passionate about something you’ve shown time and time again you have no respect for

i don't see how AI being used for just the cover image of mods might pose a problem? I absolutely hate how AI is filling the internet with slop and even affecting artists in real life, but cover images for mods? I think I can let that one slide

@krinid

Currently AI generated works have a clear look about them. I was sceptical of another mod maker, but seemed like pixel art, rather AI-generated.

The AI industry has no respect for original authors, so I'm not showing any respect back by using or endorsing them.
See:

I've seen "vibe coded" projects before and couldn't see any clear indicators of AI-generated code of any mod. "vibe coded" projects are mud pile - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaghetti_code#Big_ball_of_mud.

I liked making mods. I'm passionate about open source and good code.

I like the unique game play of mods. Normal games got boring. Played over 10,000 of them.

If someone happens to take my work without credit (like via an AI), I need a way of reaching out to either add my attribution, heavily modify or delete large sections of code stolen from me. (Both Discord and Github suck in their own ways.)

It's in actual card images, special units, structures, game setting icons. Not just banners.

@Dan I think it is easier for you to ask each mod dev whether they use AI in any way, and then compile a list of mods that (might) have AI stuff in them. I know that you're against the use of AI in general, but this only results in a thread war where both parties do not agree with eachother.

Your first post raised awareness, and thats great. But lets not start another one of those threads where its you against the world. Its not good for anyone. Just don't answer the trolls, they only like it.

Could not say it better: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-media/CAHk-=wi4zC+Ze8e+p3tMv8TtG_80KzsZ1syL9anBtmEh5Z40vg@mail.gmail.com/

Replace Linux with War.app and I guess forking it is also not an option here.

Yes.

And no, that's not the position of the Linux kernel.

I realize that some people really dislike AI, but this is an area
where I'm willing to absolutely put my foot down as the top-level
maintainer.

Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issues
with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it.

Or just walk away.

AI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it's clearly a useful one.

It may not have been that "clearly" even just a year ago, but it's no
longer in question today.

There are other questions around AI (like what the economy of it will
actually look like in the end), but "is it useful" is no longer one of
those questions. Anybody who doubts that clearly hasn't actually used
it.

Yes, it can also be a somewhat painful tool, both for maintainer
workloads and just from a "it keeps finding embarrassing bugs"
standpoint.

But the solution is not to put your head in the sand and sing "La La
La, I can't hear you" at the top of your voice like some people seem
to do.

The solution is to make sure those LLM tools _help_ maintainers
instead of just causing them pain. There's no question on that side.

We're not forcing anybody to use it, but I will very loudly ignore
people who try to argue against other people from using it.

And no, AI isn't perfect. But Christ, anybody who points to the
problems at AI had better be looking in the mirror and pointing at
themselves at the same time.

Because it's not like natural intelligence is always all that great either.

The kernel project has been and will continue to be about the technology.

Sure, the social angle of working on open source is important and
often a very motivating part of the project, but in the end that's a
side benefit, not the _point_ of the project.

This is *NOT* some kind of "social warrior" project, never has been,
and never will be.

In the kernel community we do open source because it results in better
technology, not because of religious reasons.

And so we make decisions primarily based on technical merit. Not fear
of new tools.

And for my opinion, I partly agree with you.

I dont like how AI treat their sources, but that doesnt mean that we cannot use them at all. I avoid them as much as possible, but I can see why creators such as @krinid use them. We want to create our concepts, and being stopped by simply not having a good icon/picture sucks.

And since no one benefits financially (neither Fizzer, nor the mod creator) I dont see why we cannot use AI for these problems. Especially in this game, where at most 1% of the playerbase would see the icon/image. Again, I would have it as a last resort

I'm fine with using AI to understand a problem, but not to write the code or generate images. I'm not in favor of a complete ban.

(Also Linus is wrong - clearly doesn't care about mixed licensing which breaks copyleft; directly disagrees with SFC.)

Think of generative AI disclaimers and this list as a food label:

  • Free range eggs or not free range
  • Organic or not organic
  • Whole, semi-skimmed or skimmed milk

As a consumer, you are made aware and given a choice.

Steam has AI disclaimers. If a game has AI generated front-facing assets, consumers are given a choice. Mods and games including them should have similar disclaimers.

If AI is "just a tool", why not be upfront about it? Do you fear people won't want to use the mods because of disclaiming it?

I do not fear people won't use mods because of disclaiming the usage of AI. If that is their opinion then I cannot talk them into using mods.

If you want a disclaimer or label telling people some mods were made with AI, ask Fizzer to add a label to the mods section explaining that he does not create them and thus mods could have been made with AI. This is a simple solution, as going through every mod is annoying, tedious and hard. Without the mod creator telling they used AI or not, I am also sceptical about the tools to detect them. False positives always exists

From my experience and a bit hearsay cautious AI usage in a corporate environment speeds an AI inexperienced developer up by at minimum a factor of 1.2 while for propper usage the sky is the limit with the best developers and current models being able to replace the developer side of an IT department on one to three AI subscriptions. A lack of AI speedup shows significant misalignment of the organization with the potential speedup being difficult due to corporate structures or even being actively sabotaged.

Using or not using AI is not a personal preference but not using AI is the equivalent of serious malpractice. I expect Linux 0 day vulnerabilities to be both discovered with AI help and patched immediately also with AI help. Similarly players of a mod expect a fun bug free experience which you can easiest provide with AI help.

Between various autocomplete features, AI review of code, spell-checkers and even text/image generators. Probably all my mods have used some degree of AI. Maybe except the oldest mods. Anyway, best to assume they all do - or will do if they ever get updated.

What's so special about gen AI for image creation for WA mods that you want disclaimers for this small corner of the internet? Software all around the world is written using AI, are you harassing all software and image owners globally to add disclaimers? WA itself and several mods using publicly available clip art - do you know that these clip art images weren't generated using AI?

I remember in ethics class some questions in the likes of "would you reroute an out of control train heading into a large crowd into a smaller crowd?" Now the question seems to be "would you reroute a train heading for a large crowd into open field however you would need to react with superhuman speed, only AI is able to perform?"

Very difficult ethical decision. On the one hand you have people dying. But if you give in to that pressure you might lose the right to call AI a big nothingburger.

Asking for gen AI use disclaimers isn't harassment. You've clearly not read any of the links I've provided.

Clip art images are made by actual people. AI steals human made works without consent, credit or compensation.

Multiple projects are banning gen AI because of ethical and legal reasons. Notable projects include Codeberg, Debian. Some services are mandating gen AI use disclosure, like Steam, Spotify, YouTube.

Edit:
It's probably also worth noting that even the Linux kernel requires developers to disclose AI-assisted commits, specifically because of legal reasons.

Curl also shutdown its bug bounty program because of a flood of bad AI security vulnerability reports.
