The game relies on new blood, and new members to survive. I note that there are very few new members. the past few weeks I have been online, I have only seen a handful of players under L40.
Many if not all the regulars are L55-65. many play as dedicated teams of 2 or 3, playing boards they have mastered and crushing the opposition.
newer players can learn mastery or become proficient by being part of 3vs3 or 2vs2 teams. however, no one wants a newbie or even moderate person on their team lest it cause the team to lose.
further, some game are made with very obscure rules or rule sets that are impossible to learn, or be competitive in without some way to practice on that game set.
i understand the desire to WIN, but the flip side is if someone just wants to play a game and have some fun, the entire war.app is gamified to increase your score, and have as high a winning percentage as possible. and there is no incentive to help someone who is clearly going to lose, learn that game or game set of rules. there will be no one left on War.app except L55+ players, all of whom are trying to one-up the other.
any team has senior and junior players. currently, there are no incentives in war.app to raise junior players to a higher level further, there is an incentive to create games where the rules are skewed to someone who knows the board well.
for example, I just played a game of romanivm emporivm where the 5 city-states that previously had a +1 bonus for holding City + state, had that +1 bonus removed. when i brought this up with the game host, his reply was "i just copied the settings from someone else", and brushed it off.
the war.app community may be becoming too elitist. those that stay are killing the reasons why the game may have attracted people to begin with.
also, the games that get played and created, are the same old games, over and over again. this creates a situation where the only games that are being created are those by experts, who know the game so well that essentially no one can beat them.
i'm an average player playing on a laptop, with below average equipment that isn't capable for speed. i'm probably losing 80-90% of my games. the players here are VERY good. that also means that there are no more average or up-and coming players here.
i just met at L13 player (newbie) and tried to give him some pointers. and he said i was the nicest guy on here. I created a game of Silk Road to let him learn another game with me to teach him, but never heard from him again.
Fizzer has to figure out a solution to this. the points system was great but any sports league has different divisions. when i got track time at Laguna Seca, people could sort themselves out into 5 divisions based on skill and car, groups A thru E. everyone had the most fun when they were in a group in which they were evenly matched with others. the most fun lap session I had was one afternoon when i was evenly matched with a few other cars , and we were all circulating at about the same speed.
the way WZ.app is set up, is that as one is in the league longer and your L climbs, it is **assumed** you will become a better player. this isn't so---some will cap out at level C, others B, and others will get to A or AA level proficiency.
the way WZ is designed currently, is it will spit out anyone B level or lower, and only those A or AA or AAA will stick around, or have anyone to play with them.
the community isn't served if the majority of the community is happy playing L55-65 members and "to hell with everyone else". that would be like a tennis club or golf club where only the best players play, and the newest or junior players are forced to play with those same best players, and they can leave if they can't hack it or if no one wants to play with them.
if you want the community to grow, then people need to be given points for helping junior players, coaching them or at least playing with them to show how obscure rule sets or games work. Fizzer will have to give this some thought.
not everyone is playing with a 28 inch dual monitor gaming setup with gaming hardware. or tag-teaming 2vs2 on people who are playing a new board and trying to have some fun (i'm in that situation currently, the two pros claimed it was their first time on the board---right, they set up the 2vs2 game....right...)
Fizzer will need to give this some thought. Fizzer will know the number of new players joining and the numbers of players that drop off never to return.
the community is dying if the only way to play is to play solo against AI, which is not the point. everyone only wanting to play games they know they will win, means only a few boards get played, and people will join FFA games and de-facto be teaming up against solo players.
the community may very well be dying. Only fizzer will know the true statistics.
if the number of players is stagnant if the number of players is dropping if the average level L of player is rising...
then these are not good signs for the community.
