In Dimension Delta, the wars of the early 20th century were not kind to the proud nation of France. First they lost their North African colonies to the Spanish and Italians. Then they suffered the indignity of occupation in their southern provinces after the Great War. Finally, they lost the rest of their African colonies in la Guerre du Coeur. There was, however, a silver lining to that last conflict; it broke the Spanish-Italian alliance, leaving France's two strongest rivals weakened. More good news arrived by ship when a full division of l'Armée d’Afrique landed at Nantes. A quick-thinking commander had managed to extract his troops by sea from Sierra Leone when the situation in West Africa became untenable. This force was dubbed "les Revenants" (literally "the returned", figuratively avenging spirits) by the French press and they were indeed eager for vengeance against the Spanish. The opportunity was not long to arrive. With their alliance broken, Italy and Spain both began trying to expand their occupied holdings in southern France. Belgium and the Netherlands, which had been liberated from France and Germany respectively by the Treaty of Madrid, were engaged in a conflict for control of the Low Countries that would inevitably spill across the borders of their former occupiers. Under these circumstances, France struck a pact of military cooperation with Germany. Both nations had common objectives: hold the line against this new aggression and regain territory lost in the Great War. The English wanted no part of a new conflict on the Continent. They declared neutrality and mined the Channel to remove any temptation for the belligerents to cross. French hopes rested on their new alliance, the disunity of their foes, and their unexpected strategic reserve. Would it be enough to reclaim their lands and their pride? |
