Maybe it would be a fair compromise to agree that beyond a certain skill level and game understanding, you will be very unlikely to find anyone supporting shorter boot times, because they make it impossible to consistently play on the level they are capable of.

Fizzer confirmed in his blog post that he wants ladders to be the highest level of gameplay, which doesn't seem to go well with shortening the boot times.

obviously it doenst have to be exactly 3 days, but roughly that sounds good. I wouldnt mind playing around with gaining banked time for faster turns to encourage playing faster when you can.

Talking about receiving banked time, i never really looked into how it works before.
It says i get time x added to my bank once per day.
I think its rather at the beginning of my new turn and then i get x*days_passed added to my bank?

If this is how it works, then i maximize (bank_time / turns_passed) by ending my turn right before it starts eating into my banked time.
This seems unintuitive, i thought it would reward faster play, so that a player who on average plays very fast is allowed to go slow for once.
Wouldnt it make more sense to add a percentage of what you have left on your first timer to your bank each turn?


EDIT: just to point this out: 1 day is obviously ridicolous. I like to have a life aswell. Even if i only need 2 minutes to jank in some nonsense orders, i m sure i d still get booted eventually because i aint thinking about warzone all day. If we go for 1 day, please add auto-pilot to the ladder. I m sure it would get that trophy in no time just by not getting booted :D

IMO there is no fix. Multiday is just like correspondence chess. I don't want to wait 3 days to see whether my awesome move has failed miserably and I also don't want to wait 1 day. I don't want the pressure to be forced to be online not only twice a day (= 1 day boot time) but also not within the next 3 days. I want to throw some armies around when it is my choice and then immediately move to Cities Skylines 2 once it releases.

The internet is about instant gratification. Imagine you are a youngster coming from CoD Warzone due to having accidentally typed in warzone.com in your browser. You find the game to be pretty cool, see that there is a competitive ladder around, then you see that the games move once every 3 days and puff, you are gone.

So everyone who plays multiday should just accept, that they are a boomer and already start looking for a retirement home. There might be a business niche for Fizzer to specialize on the old folk.

I meant in the past obviously when the ladder was discussed. There were many pain points, such as rating, no app integration, matchmaking, vacation-handling, no rewards, stalling, etc. that were brought up frequently, but never have I ever heard about boot time.

Maybe that change is intended to attrack new players who are not highly skilled but have no life except for warzone and just hope for others getting booted eventually. If that strategy gives out an idle power every week, awesome!

No seriously, if the ladder is expected to reflect the "highest level of gameplay", then 1d boot is not enough. Imho.

I agree with most of the players on this thread, 3 days is perfect as it is.
It allows you to spend a couple of days away from Warzone without booting, if you have a busy weekend or other things to do with your life.

If some players think that 3 days is too long and want to play faster, then the answer for them is probably not a 1v1 MD Ladder with a 1-day boot, but a 1v1 RT Ladder.

1day is both to slow to have a nice afternoon game against someone, but also to fast where oversleeping will get you booted.

Please explain the correlation, between "the old folk" and boot times.

I am a millennial and would not be able to do 1 day boot time... Lets think of a normal day to day example of how this would work.

Suppose one day I get home from work and take my turn at 6:30pm then the turn advances at 7pm but I have already shut up shop on WZ for the night...

The next day I have a parents' evening that goes until 8 so I boot in all my ladder games.

When I get home and look at Warzone I decide to leave all the ladders since I am not screwed from reaching number 1 due to boots.

Now let's think about a standard team game.

This time I manage to commit at 7pm (GMT)... the turn advances and I ask my team some questions about how they like my current orders.. make some suggestions as to what they could do this turn. Unfortunately I cannot do much intel gathering and counting as I have three other ladder games on 23 hours so I jump ship to those games.

At 1am (GMT) my teammate responds from America. I don't reply since I am asleep and have to get up at 5:30am for work the next day.

At 6pm GMT I get home and see my teammates response. They had a slightly different plan for the orders this turn and already had to commit without confering with me since they are now at work.

I commit anyway even though there are vital issues with the way our plans will work together but no time to communicate and fix it.

We lose the game against a 2v2 team made of one person playing on two accounts (Their main and alt) that don't have these communication issues.

Another aspect needs to be considered.

If players observe that the number of boots increase overall, then it might be a strategy to not surrender a clearly lost game, but to play every game for elimination. Maybe the other one will not have time to show up 10 days in a row, or 20, or maybe I can even manage to somehow run away for 30 turns/days?

This might fire back and make stalling much more popular and thus increase length of games rather than increasing the speed...

One thing to be considered is a simple slider where players can configure the boot time they'd be comfortable with. Let's say this slider ranges from 12 hours to 3 days.
Every game created now has the boot timer according to the player, who has the higher slider. (I have 18 hours, you have 24 hours - game is 24 hours boot settings)

An elder can be just as busy as a younger, even more so. It comes down to time management and not spreading yourself too thin, tempus breve est. Joining a game or a ladder is essentially a contract that states each will respect the other and play in a timely manner in accordance with game settings. You know before hand what you are getting into.

Play what you can, when you can. It baffles me why anyone would unnecessarily pressure themselves into games they cannot play, only to later say, they did not have enough time.

You, the individual, are solely responsible for how much or little you submit yourself to Warzone activity. There is enough variety here to customize your gaming experience relative to amount of time you have to play, RL not withstanding. Plus if you need to, go on vacation. I believe you get seven of them. I've been here nearly seven years and used it only once.

Nay, this not about boot times. It's about respect. Respect for the host, id est, respect the game settings. Respect for the players. Respect for Warzone.

This topic also shares elements of the psychology of gaming, id est, nobody likes to lose. Manipulation of parameters by players to squeeze out a cheap victory is even made worse when some of those players have the skill to win normally anyway. Again, it's respect, aut indigentiam eiusdem.

I dont get the point of the Slider.

The Slider would have to be atleast 3days long max.
Else we just have the same problem we are discussing already.

But then there is the fact that its so unecessary.
If you have player A who sets 16h and player B who sets 24h creating a 24h boot game, how is that any better than just doing a 3day boot game in the first place.
Like A will still commit in 16h and B will still commit in 24h even if the boot timer is 72h long.
Literally the only thing the slider does is take the flexibility away incase something unexpected happens.
Like if someone works in the kitchen in a hotel it can very spontaniously happen that you chef calls you to come by tmr even if its your freeday or holiday.. i can say that from experience.

Not necessarily, no. Some players will take the time to think more about their moves just because they can, even if they would not have minded the boot time to be shorter. Ever had a deadline and procrastinated when it was far away just because it felt distant?

Well it's fair to say that the ladder is more enjoyable to play with alts on the team ladders.

Because if you have it at 1 day boot, it is virtually impossible to reliably and consistently fix your team mates orders or fix your own orders without eating into your banked time. Communication even to just change one order takes a few hours.

So in a way this time pressure will encourage alt teams, which defeats the ultimate purpose of team ladders.

What about playing with your long family relative/work colleague who's 9/10 timezones ahead of you?

This is a test of hyper activity rather than quality team games and that's the element I personally find hardest to digest at the second.
