In a Team Game, players work together with one or more teammates to defeat all opposing teams.
Most game mechanics function the same as they do in free-for-all games, but several important rules and features are specific to team play.
Team Gameplay
Many aspects of team games work exactly as they do in normal games:
- You must still control an entire Bonus yourself to receive its income.
- You cannot deploy armies onto a teammate's Territory.
- Players on the same team still maintain separate territories, income, and deployments.
However, team games also introduce several cooperative mechanics.
Army Transfers
You may transfer armies directly to a teammate.
Simply issue an Attack/Transfer or Transfer order targeting one of your teammate's territories. Instead of attacking, the armies will be transferred to your teammate.
In Fog games, teammates share vision.
You can see your teammates' territories and observe their actions just as if they were your own.
All members of a team share a single hand of Cards.
Because cards are a shared resource, teammates should coordinate when and how cards are played.
Attacking Teammates
War.app will never attack a teammate automatically, even when using Attack Only orders.
In some situations, however, attacking a teammate may be necessary. For example, a teammate may control a territory within a bonus that you need to complete.
To attack a teammate, enable the Treat Teammates as Enemies option in the Attack/Transfer dialog.
The Attack Teammates Warning can help prevent accidental friendly attacks while still making intentional attacks easy to perform.
Card Rewards
Capturing territories from a teammate does not count toward earning cards.
To receive a card, you must capture a territory belonging to an enemy player or a Neutral territory.
Team Chat
In addition to public chat, each team has access to a private team chat channel.
Messages sent to team chat are visible only to members of your team.
Team Assignment
Teams can be assigned either manually or randomly.
Manual Teams
With manual teams, the game creator specifies exactly which players belong on each team.
These team assignments are visible in the game lobby before the game begins.
Random Teams
With random teams, War.app assigns players to teams when the game starts.
You can determine whether a game uses random teams by checking the game settings for the option:
At game start, randomly divide players into teams.
Creating a Team Game
The easiest way to create a team game is by using the built-in team game template.
If you want more control over the game's Settings, create a custom game or customize an existing template.
When creating a custom game, enable the Team Game setting on the Select Players page.
Team Victories
When a team wins, every player on that team is credited with a victory, regardless of whether they are still active.
This includes players who were:
- Eliminated
- Surrendered
- Booted
As soon as the victory becomes official, all members of the winning team receive a win on their record.
In-Progress Games
If a player is eliminated, surrenders, or is booted before the game ends, the game may temporarily appear as a loss on their Profile while the game is still in progress.
If their teammates eventually win the game, that temporary loss will be replaced with a win when the game concludes.
