A Map is a board on which the games are played on.
It consists of territories and bonuses.

Territories
Every map is divided in territories, ranging from 2 to 3200. Each player holds one or more of them at the start of the game. The basic goal is to conquer all enemies' territories, or to conquer the whole map if necessary.
Here's an in-game screenshot:
http://i39.tinypic.com/108buxf.png

The black is the background, you can't select it nor can you attack or influence it in any way. It's usually black, but some maps have different colors, or even a pattern or an image.

The gray and colored shapes are territories, they each have a name that's not being shown on this picture, but you can see it by holding your mouse over it. The filling has different colors, depending on what player owns it. Here, two players are visible, the blue and the orange one. Some territories have numbers in them, while some don't. This is because your point of view is the blue player, and with this fog setting you can only see the numbers on the territories you border.

The gray territories are neutral, they can be attacked by anyone, and they defend themselves, but they cannot attack anyone else. On most games, they have 2 armies, i.e. you have to defeat two armies to conquer it. But it could as well be, as shown in this example, 0 armies, which means you get it directly if you send any number of armies to conquer it. Also, it could raise up to 10 or even higher, those high-valued neutrals are called wastelands.

From a territory, you can perform a two actions on another territory: attack or transfer.

Bonuses
A bonus is a group of territories that give you additional armies if you control all of them. They can easily be distinguished from each other by their distinct color, as shown on the image above. The red bonus that the orange player controls, called Central Russia, consists of 5 territories. You can also see the red square above it, that is the bonus link. It shows how many armies a certain bonus gives. Sometimes they are shaped differently, or a long distance from the actual territories, or completely absent. If you're unsure, you can always click on a territory, then on the "More Info" button in the window on your left, and you get a list of what territories it borders to, and of what bonuses it is part of. Sometimes there are multiple layers of bonuses on each other, the larger ones are called Superbonuses in that case.

Many map designers include a Warlords distribution and Cities distribution manually by picking the territory in each bonus themselves. For most games, this is preferred since the map designer typically knows best where to place these.

However, WarLight also allows you to utilize a Random Warlords Distribution or Random Cities Distribution for any map. This determines the distribution randomly when the game is started. This has a few advantages:
* They allow each game to have a slightly different start, ensuring variety in strategies.
* In a fog game, players will not know where the cities or start points will be.
* These are available even if the map designer does not explicitly create a warlords or cities distribution.

These distributions are designed for maps where bonuses do not overlap. If a map designer overlaps bonuses, these distributions may produce unexpected results.

This will generally mean that Superbonuses will have one territory for each minor bonus, plus an additional territory; included in distribution for warlords, and excluded in distribution for cities.

Random Warlords will not include a starting location in any bonus that is worth 0 armies per turn or negative armies per turn. In Strategic 1v1 settings, this is why Korea, Japan, Hawaii and Alaska are not eligible for picking.

Local deployments is a game setting that changes the way that armies may be deployed. When enabled by a game creator, armies that are earned from a bonus may only be deployed to the territories within that bonus.

Armies earned by other methods, such as base armies per turn, reinforcement cards, extra armies for territories, or negative sanction cards, are called "free armies" and can be deployed anywhere.

When your income is reduced (by, for example, negative bonuses, army cap, or sanction cards), the reduction in income will be spread out amongst all deployment options evenly. For example, if you have a bonus worth 3 armies per turn, 5 base armies per turn, and a bonus worth -2, the -2 will take one away from the 3 bonus armies and one away from the 5 free armies.

This setting cannot be used with overlapping bonuses, such as superbonuses. If you want to use this setting on a map that has overlapping bonuses, you must override one of each overlapping bonuses to 0 or negative, so that no territories belong to multiple positive bonuses.

An achievement in WarLight is a task or accomplishment that players can unlock. Players can earn achievements for doing various things throughout the game.

Achievements also award points. Achievements award points based on their difficulty – the more difficult the achievement, the more points you'll get for unlocking it.

All achievements earned are displayed on player's profiles.

There are no achievements that require a membership to get, so free players can still complete every achievement if they desire to.

Achievement List
The full list of achievements has not yet been revealed! The main way to discover what achievements exist is by stumbling into them or checking other player's profiles.

You can also see some achievements you haven't earned yet by visiting your profile and looking at the achievements list. However, this will only show you a maximum of 5 achievements that you haven't earned. Once you unlock one of those, you can see another in its place. If this section contains fewer than 5, then you know it's showing all remaining achievements.

Trophies
Achievements are considered things that any player could just go out and do. Trophies, on the other hand, are for tasks that are rare, very difficult, or special in some way. For example, there’s a trophy for achieving rank #1 on the 1v1 Ladder, and another for playing WarLight while it was beta. Trophies are intended to be rare, and most players will probably never get one.

Unlike achievements, trophies don’t actually award points themselves, but they’re displayed prominently on player’s profiles. (Ranking #1 on the 1v1 Ladder would award plenty of points from the ladder, just not from the trophy itself.)

Superbonuses are generally described as any bonus containing smaller bonuses. A common example is continent bonuses when there are country bonuses within that continent.
General function
Superbonuses are meant to make maps more interesting. For example, on a map where there are 4 countries that contain 50 territories each, you could distribute the bonuses in the following three ways:
* You could make every country a bonus. These bonuses are hard to capture and to defend, and the person who gets one first is likely to win the game because of the high army count.
* You could divide every country in 5-10 smaller bonuses, that are easier to capture and defend. In this scenario you can capture bonus after bonus once you have a good income and snowball through all players who have less income.
* You could make two layers of bonuses: the country bonus and the smaller bonuses. The smaller ones are often named "Northwestern X" and such, but if there are better administrative divisions available they should give the names, as they are easier to distinguish. But when working with multiple layers, you must make several adjustments to make the map more balanced and eye-appealing.
Bonus colors
When dealing with superbonuses, you generally want either the large or the smaller bonuses to show their color to the territories, but not both in a scrambled way. This could happen when creating a map and not making the bonuses in the correct order.
To re-color a group of territories to a different bonus they belong to, follow these steps.
# Select the territories you want to re-color. This can easily be done by clicking on the bonus link on the map, this selects them all.
# Search the list to your left for the bonus you want not to be seen.
# Double-click the check-box.
# Now the color should have moved to the background.
As for the color itself, there are map-makers who prefer to make the superbonus green, and make the small bonuses vary from light to dark green, or with any other color. This can be helpful to recognize the superbonus quickly, and to aim to complete it easier.

Army number
If you are making a map with superbonuses, you are likely to apply the same army-to-territory ratio as you have done in your other bonuses. For example, if you have all your bonuses where the army number is the number of territories times 0,75 (save extraordinary factors like placement or importance), you can't use the same ratio for the superbonus and the underlying bonuses. If you do so, it all adds up when someone has all of it to 1,5 times the number of territories.
You should lower the number of armies so it all adds up to the ratio you have in mind.

Requirements
Connections are Visible
It must be obvious when looking at the map which territories connect and which don't.

The biggest mistake some map creators make is to connect two territories over water, but don't include any indication on the map that they connect. It's customary to use yellow lines to show where the connections are - see the Earth Map for an example. It's not necessary to use yellow lines, it just must be obvious where the connections are. It may be obvious that the territories connect in the map designer, but it needs to be obvious in the real game too.

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/ConnectionMissing.png

Tiny Territories
All territories must be big enough to fit a two-digit army number. Often people's first instinct is to keep territories real-life sized, however this doesn't work well in WarLight's engine. This is especially evident once you try playing the mobile version of WarLight.

Take, for example, Hawaii in the Earth Map. Hawaii is a very small island, but in the Earth map it's sized significantly larger so that it can fit the army number.

In the map designer, you'll find a button labeled Show Example Armies. When clicking this, all army numbers must fit entirely within the territory's borders.

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/TinyTerritories.png

See Inkscape tips for a guide on how to enlarge territories to make them fit their army number.

Copyright Violations
By uploading a map to WarLight, you are asserting that you own or have the necessary licenses, rights, consents, and permissions to the content within. See the Terms of Service for full details.

Missing or Mistaken Connections
Maps should make an effort to find and missing or mistaken territory connections. Missing connections are a very common problem, as it is difficult to find every last connection error within the map designer alone.

The best way to find these kinds of mistakes is to play the map with real humans. Incorrect or missing connections are also much more pronounced in the map previewer (which you can access via links in the Get Link for Sharing window), where all territories connected to the clicked one turn bright yellow. Map creators should create several test games on their map with real human players and play them out.

If you need help finding players to test your map, make a thread on the map development forum asking for volunteers to help test your map. There are always lots of people willing to help test.

Territories are named
All territories should be named appropriately. Naming many territories the same thing, or just typing gibberish makes it hard for players to coordinate in team games.

Bonus Links
Bonus Links are the small boxes that show many armies each bonus is worth. Without these, it is difficult to tell where the bonuses are. See Creating the SVG for instructions on how to add bonus links.

When possible, bonus links should be placed near or on top of the bonus they correspond to.

Appropriate Size
The SVG file specifies the width and height of the map in pixels. The recommended starting point is 1000x1000, however map creators can reduce this if they are making a small map or increase it if they're making a big map.

The size specified in the SVG file determines how big the army numbers will be on the map. This size must be appropriate for the map. If a very small map is stretched into a huge SVG file, the army numbers will be too small to see without zooming in. In order to avoid unnecessary zooming, a large SVG file should only be used if the map really needs that much room to fit all of its territories.

Territories should not overlap
Player-controllable territories can never overlap with each other. If you find yourself in a situation where you feel like you want one territory to be on top of another, you need to cut a hole in the outer territory in the shape of the inner one. This makes the inner one look like it's on top, even though technically the territories aren't overlapping.

Testing Maps
The map must be a real map and not just a test. It's a good idea to make your first map just a couple of territories to prove you understand how to make a real map, however maps without any strategic value should not go public. You're free to put these into testing mode to play games on them, however.

Grandfathered Maps
Players sometimes notice maps that are already public that don't meet some of these requirements. Older maps that were created before these requirements existed are grandfathered in, such as the Wheel map that does not have bonus links or the United States Big map that had tiny territories. The presence of the old violations does not exempt new maps from the requirements.

Moros: /* Points from Games */ I think this means the same, but it is more clear.

Players can earn points by winning multi-player games or tournaments, unlocking achievements, or from ladders. Points are used to gain levels, which unlock additional features.

If you visit http://warlight.net/Points, you can see how many points you have, the progress to your next level, and all points you've earned in the last 30 days. If you hover your mouse cursor over a point award, you will be shown additional details about how that number was calculated.

Points from Games
When players win a ranked multi-player game, they are awarded points. The number of points the winner(s) are awarded is based off of a number of factors:
* The number of players who didn't win the game. Winning a 3-player FFA gives (on average) twice as many points as a 1v1, since there were two losers as opposed to one. Likewise, winning a 20 player FFA gives 19 times as many points as a 1v1.
* The levels of the players who didn't win the game. Defeating a player who is equal level to you gives a base of 5,000 points. Defeating a player who is 10 or more levels above you gives a base of 10,000 points. Defeating a player who is lower level than you gives fewer than 5,000 points, depending on their level.
* If the winning player is over level 8, their points are also affected by how recently they've defeated this player before. Defeating the same player twice in a 10-day period reduces the points earned from that player by 50%. Defeating the same player three or more times in a 10-day period reduces the points earned from that player by 80%.
* In team games, the team essentially splits the points earned from the defeated players. However, team members can also receive different amounts of points due to the above rules (if the team members are different levels or have defeated some of the opponents recently.)
* Tournament games award 50% more points. Ladder games award double points. Real-time games award half as many points as multi-day games.
* Games with overridden offensive or defensive kill rates award 80% less points.

Points from Tournaments
The winner of a ranked tournament is awarded points based on a number of factors:
* The number of players in the tournament. Winning a 128 player tournament awards, on average, twice as many points as a 64 player tournament.
* The levels of the players who didn't win the tournament. Each player who is equal level to you adds 500 points. Each player who is ten levels or more above you adds 1,000 points.
* If a player defeats the same opponent in tournaments multiple times within a 30 day period, the points they earn from that player are reduced by 80% for all victories after the first. This is tracked independently between games and tournaments.
* If a team wins a tournament, they essentially split the points earned from all defeated players. However, team members can also receive different amounts of points due to the above rules (if the team members are different levels or have defeated some of the opponents recently in a tournament.)
* In addition to the tournament points, the winner of course won a bunch of games within the tournament itself which all awarded elevated points.

Points from Ladders
The 1v1 and 2v2 ladders award points every 24 hours to each player that holds a rank of 30 or better. The seasonal ladder awards points at the end of each season to each player that holds a rank of 30 or better.

They award points based on this formula: (31 – rank) ^ 3 * 0.6 + 1000

The seasonal ladder additionally multiplies the result of this formula by the number of days in the season.

Bonuses are groups of territories that give you an income bonus if you control all of them. The bonuses value is typically placed in a small rectangle near the bonus, the so-called bonuslink, but other shapes are used as well.

The basic value of the bonus is determined by the map creator. Many map creators value their bonuses by the number of territories that make it up; the more territories in the bonus the more armies are awarded per turn. Also factored into how many armies are awarded by a bonus is how exposed it is. Generally, if a bonus is in the corner of the map with few access points, then it will be worth less than one that has the same number of territories but more access points.
There are also special bonuses that only contain one territory, capitals for example. These should not be worth more than 1 or 2 armies, or it may get unbalanced.

In the settings you can edit any bonus value between 1000 and -1000 when making your own game.
Creating the SVG

Moros: /* Getting Started */ Corrected the maximum map size after finding it out the hard way.

The first step in making a map is create an SVG file. This SVG file defines what the map looks like, where the territories are, what their shapes are, as well as the "bonus link" rectangles that show the bonus values.

You can use any SVG editor you want. Many graphic design applications have the ability to export to SVG, so if you're already familiar with one you may use that. If you don't know what to use, try Inkscape. Inkscape is a good choice since it's free, works across all of the major operating systems, and is overall very nice application. You can download it at http://inkscape.org.

It's a good idea to test your SVG file as you are building it. Don't wait until you've spent a bunch of time building the perfect map before uploading it into WarLight the first time. You want to make sure the tools and techniques you are using will work with WarLight, as WarLight doesn't support some SVG features.

Getting Started
After opening Inkscape, you should do a few things to set up your document:

* Set the background to black: This is so it fits in with WarLight's theme. Click "Document Properties" (top-rightmost button, or shift-control-D) and click the "Background" (under the default "Page" tab). Set the R,B, and G to 0 and the A to 255 to get black.
* Set the document size: Go back to "Document Properties" and under "Custom Size" set the Width and Height to about 900. Ensure the units says px (for pixels). You can adjust the size for your own map's needs. (Note about map sizes: Most maps work best when they're less than 1000x1000. If army numbers appear too small when you test your map, that means your map is too big and had to be shrunken down, causing the army numbers to shrink. Thanks to the magic of SVG, you can reduce the size of your map without losing any detail. If you're making a super large map, note that the maximum map size is 3330x2400.)

Then just start drawing, using Inkscape's drawing tools. For learning how to draw in Inkscape, there are many good tutorials on the web. Try searching with search engines or on Youtube.

Assign Territories
As you are drawing, you will need to designate which objects will be player-controllable territories and which are just for decoration. To mark an object as a player-controllable territory, give it a id of Territory_#. For example, Territory_1, Territory_2, Territory_3, etc. To do this in Inkscape, right-click on the object and select "Object Properties." Then set the "ID" to Territory_1.

Inkscape will tell you if you try to re-use the same number more than once (it will say "id exists!"), so you don't need to pay super close attention to where you left off in the numbering. Also, you don't need to use every number - it's okay to jump around (for example, skipping from Territory_11 to Territory_19.) This is also good if you decide to delete one; you don't need to go back and fill in the gap.

Anything that doesn't start with Territory_ won't be a territory, so you can include extra objects for decoration or instruction, such as lines, arrows, etc.

If you're making a really large map, note that maps may not contain more than 3200 territories.

Starting from an image
If you're modeling your map after something you have an image of, it's often helpful to insert an image, set its opacity to 50% and just draw over the top of it. The image itself won't show up when you upload it to WarLight.

To insert an image in Inkscape, just drag the image file into your canvas. Then, you can move it to the back by selecting Object -> Lower to Bottom. You can adjust its opacity by selecting Object -> Fill and Stroke.

Overridden Properties
WarLight will override a few properties of each player-controllable territory. Therefore, it does not matter what you set for these properties when designing the map, since the values will be overwritten when the map is used in a real game:

* Fill color: The fill color will be replaced with the color of the player who controls the territory
* Stroke color (border color): The stroke color will be replaced with the color of the bonus the territory belongs to (you'll set these colors for each bonus later)
* Stroke width (border width): The stroke width will always be 1.

Player-controllable territories are "brought to the front." That is, you can't overlap a player-controllable territory with another object and expect it to stay that way.

Further, player-controllable territories should not overlap each other - you don't want to have territories that players can't click on. If you want a territory to be on top of another, you really need to cut a hole in the outer territory in the shape of the inner one. This makes the inner one look like it's on top, even though technically the territories aren't overlapping.

Bonus Links
You can make a small "bonus link" rectangle that shows the number of armies a bonus gives. This is preferred over making your own rectangles with a number in them for two reasons:

* If players click on the bonus link, it selects the bonus.
* If players override the value of the bonus, the game will show the correct number.

To make a bonus link, make an object near the bonus. A 16x16 rectangle is the standard, but some players prefer to use circles or other artistic styles. Give the object an ID of BonusLink_BonusName. Remove any spaces or punctuation, special letters (like the ß), letters of any other alphabet then the latin alphabet, or letters with diacritics (such as ë, î, ú) from the bonus name. For example, the Earth map has a bonus named "Middle East" and the rectangle's name is "BonusLink_MiddleEast". Be sure to use the same casing; for example, bonuslink_middleeast would not work.

If you are not sure what to name your bonus link box, WarLight will help you out. After uploading your SVG file and creating the bonuses in the map designer, open the Bonuses window and look at the text. The Bonuses window will tell you what to name your Bonus Link rectangle. If you've named the object correctly, but WarLight still isn't recognizing it, it may be because your bonus link is a group (a "g" node in the svg file.) Only individual objects can be bonus links, not groups. To fix this, in Inkscape, just right-click the offending object and select "Ungroup."

The fill color of a bonus link will be set to the color assigned to the bonus. The stroke color of the bonus link will always be set to yellow, and this color is not overridable. However, the yellow stroke can be hidden by setting the stroke opacity to zero.

Including Text
To include text in your SVG file, please follow the approach below. After doing this, your text will behave as an object. If you need to modify what the text says, you must delete and re-create the object.

* Make the text using the text tool in Inkscape.
* Arrange the text exactly as you want it.
* Select the text.
* Select Path -> Object to Path
* If the text are not showing in the Warlight Editor. These commonly happens when:
** You do not turn the texts into an object.
** The text is black.
** The text are on territories.

Because I would really like to know if it's linear or exponential. --By Moros (talk) 05:57, 31 July 2013 (PDT)

Territories are the basic building blocks of WarLight. Each territory is always controlled by a player or neutral.

Bonuses are made up of a collection of territories.

At the start of a game, every player gets a number of territories that is set up in the settings.

Territories are the key for winning a game. The more territories you have, you'll get more bonus armies which can help you to occupy your enemy. However, if you lose all your territories, you will be eliminated from the game.

When we play, we can see many colored territories. Grey territories belong to neutrals, colored belong to players (or AI's) and territories on which we can't see number of armies are fogged. They can be neutral's or player's territory.

The map with the biggest number of territories is [[United States Big (3.1k)|United States Big [3.1k]]] map, having 3109 territories and 158 bonuses. The big map of Poland has 2.5 thousand territories. However, the map with the smallest number of territories is the Duel map, having only 2 territories. It shows a pirate and a ninja dueling.
New players sometimes think they need to attack 1s with 3s or 2s with 5s just to be sure they win, but this isn't necessary at the 16% luck level.'

* GG/gg = Good game, often said at the end of a game to compliment other players with their strategy, fair-play and/or manners.
* NC = No cards. Often in game or tournament titles.
* 16% = The luck is set at 16%. It can be any percentage, but 16% is popular because the often-used 4vs2-attack will have a 100% chance of winning. Often in game or tournament titles.
* gl = Good luck
* hf= Have fun
* random = Random distribution of territories upon starting a game. Often in game or tournament titles.
* auto = Random (automatic) distribution of territories upon starting a game. Often in game or tournament titles.
* FFA = Free for all, i.e. without teams.
* Strategic = A game with settings equal to or largely like the Strategic 1v1 template. Often in game or tournament titles.
* Diplomacy = A game with private chat enabled, to encourage truces and treaties between players of different teams.

Moros:

http://warlight.net/Images/AbandonHelp.png

The abandon and blockade cards change one of your territories to a neutral and multiply the number of armies on that territory by a predefined factor, usually increasing it. They're useful for creating a defensive blockade, among other uses. Since the armies on the territory you select are changing into neutral armies, you are essentially permanently losing control of the armies on that territory.

Abandon Card
Abandon cards are played after deployments but before any attacks happen. This means you can deploy armies to a territory in the same turn in which you abandon it to help the card have maximum effect.

Examples of use:

* If a chokepoint exists just outside of your bonus, and you don't plan on expanding in that direction soon, you can place a large army there and abandon it. This will create a nice barrier for opponents, such as in the Alaska picture above.
* If you have a foothold in a neighboring bonus but you don't want to take it, you can make a large neutral in it to discourage opponents from wanting that bonus - similar to a wasteland.
* If you know that an opponent will attack you next turn, and you know that you will probably lose or come close to losing, you can take significantly more armies away from that opponent by abandoning the territory they are attacking. However, if you are wrong and they do not attack, they will then see that it's neutral and can decide to leave it alone - essentially wasting your armies.

Blockade Card
The blockade card works similarly to the abandon card, however it is less effective. Instead of happening at the beginning of your turn, it happens at the end. This means any attacks, airlifts, or other actions happen before the territory changes into a neutral and increases its armies.

The advantage of using the blockade card in lieu of the abandon card in your games means that, on offense, you won't have to worry about your large stacks getting devastated. Since the blockades happen after attacks, your offensive stacks can freely move around without hitting any unexpected abandons.

The blockade card is a little more difficult to use than the abandon card. When playing a blockade card, it's very important to ensure you still own the territory you're blockading at the end of your turn. If you lose the territory you played the card on, the card will have no effect and you don't get the card back. Therefore, it's recommended that you play this on territories that you know you won't lose, such as those that don't touch an opponent or that are sufficiently defended.

Unlike the abandon card, you can move armies into the territory you played a blockade card on in the same turn, either via a normal transfer or via airlift. These armies will then be able to take part in the blockade, and increase the resulting blockade size even further.

Rounding
If the resulting neutral size does not come out evenly, it will be rounded to the nearest whole number. If the remainder is exactly 0.5, it will be rounded down.

Wastelands are neutral territories with a high amount of armies, compared to the rest of the map. These effectively become "dead" territories that won't get taken down. This serves to change the gameplay around. For example, if a wasteland appears at a choke-point it could drastically change the way the game plays out in that region of the map. It is each player's job to interpret how the wasteland will impact the game and to adjust their strategy accordingly.

Since bonuses with large wastelands are generally undesirable for capturing, sometimes the entire bonus is said to be a wasteland or to be wastelanded.

There are three possible ways to form wastelands.

Randomly distributed wastelands
When a game creator adds wastelands in the settings to their game, WarLight will randomly distribute neutrals around before populating the rest of the map. Typically, the game creator will specify a very large size for the wastelands.

The game creator can control the number of wastelands that will be distributed as well as the size of the wastelands. In rare cases, WarLight will generate fewer wastelands than requested since it must ensure that there is enough room for all players to get at least one territory to start with.

Wastelands created by players
Wastelands can also be created by players, but, as wastelands are by definition neutral, they have to become neutral territories.

This most often happens by using the Abandon card or the Blockade card. These cards will not only make a single territory neutral, but they will also multiply the armies on the territory by a predefined factor. You can use this on a choke-point to protect your territories on the other side. The downside is that you won't be able to deploy armies on the wasteland.

Players can also create wastelands by getting booted or surrendering (while not turning into an AI). All their territories will turn neutral, but the number of armies on each territory will remain. That can either be a bad or a good thing for another player. The bad thing is that the territories that had large numbers of armies on them (typically the ones at the front) will become very hard to capture, they will become wastelands. The good side is that once you enter the inner lands of the booted/surrendered player, the territories will often have one army on them each. On most games, this is fewer than the neutral territories that have never been captured before, as they are typically two armies each. However, these territories are not considered wastelands.

Wastelands created by the host in a custom scenario
The least common type: if the host is a member (or if he is making a game on a map he made himself), he can create a custom scenario for the game. He will be able to tell for all territories who they will belong to at the start of the game, and how many armies they start with. If they choose to make a neutral territory start with a lot of armies, this will be a wasteland. With these custom wastelands, the host can do all kinds of things. He can make two teams start on the opposite sides of a "wall" of wastelands, or he can make certain parts of the map unreachable, by surrounding them with wastelands.
Creating the SVG

Moros: /* Bonus Links */

If you're making a super large map, note that the maximum map size is 3330x2440.)

* Select the text.
* Select Path -> Object to Path

This page lists the SVG workarounds you may need to use to get your map working in WarLight.

ViewBox Fix
WarLight currently has a hard time understanding SVG files that have setting for an SVG's width and height from its view box. This can cause maps to appear incorrectly sized when uploaded to WarLight, or to not appear at all if they are so much larger than the screen that all of the territories are off-screen.

To check if this is causing an issue or to fix it, follow these steps:

# Open the SVG file in Inkscape
# Open the XML Editor (4th button from the top right)
# Click on the top-most node (it should start with svg:svg)
# Inspect the "width", "height" and "viewBox" attributes. ViewBox should have 4 numbers, which represent (in order): x, y, width, height
# The viewBox should be set to 0 and 0 for x and y, and to the same values as width and height. For example, these settings are correct:
## width = 900
## height = 400
## viewBox = 0 0 900 400
# If the viewBox isn't rooted at 0,0 or if its width and height don't match the others, simply change the viewBox by selecting it, typing in the correct numbers, and clicking set. After doing this, your map will likely shift all of its territories to different locations. Now you should select all of the territories and move/resize them to fit them back within the box. After doing this, the map should work correctly in WarLight.

Text
Warlight doesn't support the plain text you can type in in most SVG editors. They won't show. So you'll need to transfer them to paths. That can be done this way:
# Open the SVG file in Inkscape.
# Select the text you want to transfer.
# Open the menu "Paths", and from there the option at the top: "Object to Path" Click it.
Now re-upload the map to Warlight and you're done!
Dummy teammate
I was considering adding a page for a game variant I invented myself, called dummy teammate, or dummy for short.
It is normally played on small earth, or a map of similar size, such as the Israel map. Every team consists of two players, one human and one AI. And all bonuses are the negative versions of their normal value. And you get 1 army for every territory you own each turn.

In a game like this you will have to work with your AI to ensure it doesn't complete bonuses, because that will lower its income. It's played on small maps because on maps like USA big, or even normal Europe you wouldn't be able to control every bonus of your teammate.

I am not sure if I should add this or not, because it may be not different enough from a normal game to really be an independent game variant.
Bug with Small Strokes
There's a bug with Flash that causes strokes (object's borders) to appear too small when the stroke's thickness is 0.5 or lower.

When strokes are 0.5 or lower, Flash will render the stroke as a hairline stroke. That is, an infinitely small one that always takes up one pixel no matter how far you zoom in.

For this reason, you should avoid any strokes of 0.5 or lower.

Note that it's possible to have a object that specifies its stroke greater than 0.5, but if the object is being scaled down due to a transform somewhere else in the SVG file the stroke will be reduced. If the final reduced stroke is less than or equal to 0.5, the issue will appear. Conversely, if an object specifies a stroke of 0.5 or less, but gets scaled up due to a transform to a value greater than 0.5, it will render just fine.

Custom scenarios (not to be confused with scenario distributions) allow game creators to specify exactly how they want their map to start, territory-by-territory.

Details
Game creators accomplish this by defining a slot (letters) for each player to your game, including open seats and AIs. Then, when you build the map, you can assign corresponding slots to territories, as well as the number of armies that each territory starts with.

This is useful for a variety of reasons. For example:

* You can give players handicaps, such as starting one player with fewer armies. This is useful when veterans want to introduce a new player to WarLight, or experienced players just want to give themselves additional challenge.
* A World War I scenario where you give one player control of Germany and another gets control of France.
* A Godzilla scenario where one player starts with 10,000 armies, and 20 other players are teamed up to take down Godzilla.
* A hand-crafted map where bonuses that start with wastelands in them are worth additional armies per turn, giving incentive to take down the wasteland.
* A finely-tuned 1v1 map created by picking which territories are available for players to pick, or making less-desirable bonuses start with fewer neutral armies, or placing wastelands in strategic positions.

Custom scenarios can be used to create unfair / unbalanced games. When experimenting with variants like these, it may take several games to figure out the correct ratios to make the game fair and fun for all players. It is recommended to set games as practice games until the correct balance is reached.

Member benefit
Anybody can use custom scenarios in single-player, however only members can create games using custom scenarios in multi-player games. Non-members can still join the multi-player games, they just can't create them.
That's unless the non-member is the creator of that map. Then he's granted all freedom a member gets in making the game, including number of players and luck value. He can however not make tournaments on it.

Custom scenarios with manual distribution
If a game creator elects to use manual distribution, then every territory assigned a slot will be available for players to pick. The slot letter actually does not matter in this case - you could just assign every territory that you want to be available to slot A.

Custom scenarios in tournaments
If a custom scenario is used in a tournament with automatic distribution, the slots players receive will be randomized for each game.

Custom scenarios with open seats
If there are multiple open seats with the same slot on the same team (or all on no team), players joining the open seat will receive a random slot.

Tips for entering custom scenarios quickly
On large maps, it may take a while to set up everything you need. Here are two tips for speeding this up:

First, make note of the "Copy to all" button. Using this, you can set every territory on the map. This is useful when you want the majority of the territories to be the same thing. Use this when first getting started, as it will make your life easier.

Second, you can use your keyboard to speed up the entering process. Follow these steps for each territory:
# Click a territory
# Type in the number of armies
# Press "Tab"
# Type the slot letter
# Repeat for next territory

For example, to set Brazil to 5 armies and slot G, simply click Brazil, press 5-Tab-G. Once practiced, this strategy allows you to set a territory in less than a second.

Super bonuses are generally described as any bonus containing smaller bonuses.A common example is continent bonuses when there are country bonuses within that continent.
General function
Super bonuses are meant to make maps more interesting.
When dealing with super bonuses, you generally want either the large or the smaller bonuses to show their color to the territories, but not both in a scrambled way.
As for the color itself, there are map-makers who prefer to make the super bonus green, and make the small bonuses vary from light to dark green, or with any other color. This can be handful to recognize the super bonus quickly, and to aim to complete it easier.

Army number
If you are making a map with super bonuses, you are likely to apply the same army-to-territory ratio as you have done in your other bonuses. For example, if you have all your bonuses where the army number is the number of territories times 0,75 (save extraordinary factors like placement or importance), you can't use the same ratio for the super bonus and the underlying bonuses. If you do so, it all adds up when someone has all of it to 1,5 times the number of territories.
You should lower the number of armies so it all adds up to the ratio you have in mind.

Bonuses are groups of territories that give you an income bonus if you control all of them. The bonuses value is typically placed in a small rectangle near the bonus.

Note that it's possible to have a SVG file that specifies a stroke greater than 0.5, but if the object is being scaled down due to a transform the stroke will be reduced. If the final reduced stroke is less than or equal to 0.5, the issue will appear. Similarly, it's fine for an SVG to specify a stroke of .5 or less if the object is being scaled up.
Hi Matma, I added a piece about your ID generator on the Automating the map creation process article, because I think that tool should be more widely known too. If you have anything to add to or to adjust on my minor addition, feel free to do so. --Moros 14:59, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
