You can pay to become a Warzone '''member''' which allows you to play without advertisements and also unlocks some additional features for you to use.

==Membership does not make you stronger!==
Membership unlocks new features and gets rid of advertisements. It doesn't increase your chances at winning a game. Warzone doesn't sell additional armies, [[cards]], or anything that would give paying players an advantage over free players. Players have the same chances to win as members.
==Member Benefits==
There are a few benefits of purchasing a membership:

This page shows how to create the basic elements of a Warzone [[map]] using Inkscape. If you are new to Inkscape then it is recommended that you read this!

== Setting Page Properties ==

Before you start drawing your map there a couple of things that need to be done.

To access page properties click 'File' then 'Document Properties'. A small tab should appear.

Firstly the background colour needs to be changed to black. This is not really necessary, since Warzone has black as the default background already (unless you make a background yourself), but it can help you expect what the map will look like while drawing it. Just click the squared bar labelled 'Background' and change it to black.

Secondly the size of the document can be changed. The options for this are located on the bottom half of the page properties tab.

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/InkscapeDocumentProperties.png

''Please note'' that you can change the page size later on without affecting your drawing. The max size for a Warzone map is 3330x2440. Also you can resize the document to fit the size of your drawing in the page properties tab as well.

== Inserting a Template Image ==

To make a map that is both accurate and looks great you may want to use a template of the place you’re making a map of.

You can upload a image to Inscape from your computer may clicking on 'File' then 'Import'. Double click the image and you’re done.

If a box appears asking to link or embed the image then select 'embed'.

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/InkscapeImageUpload.png

You can resize the image the standard way, by dragging the corners and arrows presented.

== Creating a Territory ==

This section will show how to create a [[territory]] from start to finish.

First you must select the 'Draw Calligraphic Or Brush Strokes' tool from the left side bar, (the one that looks like a ball point pen with 2 white dots below it.)

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/InkscapePen.png

This tool will allow you to create straight lines and curves to form shape. Just click to form straight lines, hold to form curves.

Connect the end of the line to the start to create a shape.

If part of your shape is out of place then you do not have to redraw the whole thing! You can use the 'Edit Path By Nodes' tool located at the 2nd from top tool on the left hand side tool bar. Your shape will appear red showing every corner and node in the shape, you can drag the nodes to edit your shape.

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/InkscapeNodes.png

The final step of making a territory is to name it. Select the shape and go to 'Object' then 'Object Properties'. On click a small box will appear. The description, label and title do not affect the territory when uploading to Warzone. It is the Id that you need to change. Replace the text inside the Id box with Territory_ followed by a number. EG: Territory_34

To set the Id once changed click 'Set'.

''Please note'' you can change the colour settings and line thickness of a shape but Warzone will automatically change them to the map standard. To change these settings go to 'Object' then 'Fill And Stroke'.

== Creating a Bonus ==

[[Bonuses]] are made in a simular way to territories but it's much easier!

Most bonuses are square shaped, but you can have them any shape you like. If you chose square or circle a preset shape maker tool is located at the top half of the left hand tool bar.

Just create the shape of you bonuse to the size you want. (It can be edited whenever you like.)

Then like a territory go to 'Object' then 'Object Properties' to be greeted with the Object Properties box.

Like a territory the label, title and description do not matter but the Id does.

The Id needs to be BonusLink_ followed by the bonus name. EG: BonusLink_EastEurope

Please note when uploading to Warzone you can add spaces to the name but the capitals and name must be the same. So BonusLink_EastEurope can be named on Warzone EastEurope or East Europe but not east europe or East europe.

== Inserting Text ==

Some Warzone maps contain text, either for titles or to add effect to the map.

To add text just click the 'A' on the left hand tool bar.

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/InkscapeText.png

When you choose where to place your text you can change its font type, size, boldness and italics at the top of your screen.

Like shapes then can be moved and edited at any time.

''Please note'' for text to appear when uploaded to Warzone it must be of a path type. To do this just select the text and go to 'Path' then 'Object To Path'. Job done.

== Unioning (a Territory that Spans Over Several Shapes) ==

Sometimes a single territory is made up of several shapes! These need to be combined as a territory must be one shape only. Sometimes you can't just redraw them as they might not connect (E.g.: Nations with islands,) but who wants to redraw them anyway?

You can combine shapes easily by using the Union tool.

Select all shapes you want to combine (use the shift key or drag over all the shapes.) Once selected go to 'Path' then 'Union' and multiple have become one.

''Please note'' is one of the shapes you group has a Id of Territory_ you may get errors when uploading to Warzone.

== Fixing small territories ==

The union feature can also be used to ensure players can click on small territories. Take, for example, Baja from the Earth map. In its raw form, it's way too small to fit an army number or be clickable:

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/Baja1.png

To rectify this, we draw a circle on top of it:

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/Baja2.png

Then select both the new circle and the Baja territory behind it at the same time. Select Path -> Union, and observe the resulting territory:

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/Baja3.png

== Cutting holes  ==

Sometimes maps call for having territories inside of other territories or bonuses within territories, maybe even water. It may be logical to just make both territories and put the outer one behind the inner one, but this doesn't work since in Warzone player-controllable territories should never overlap. Instead, a hole should be cut in the bigger territory so the smaller one can persist in the hole.

To accomplish this, we use the Path -> Difference command. To begin, select both territories (the inner and outer one) at the same time using Shift+Click

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/CutTutorial1.png

Then select Path -> Difference. This will delete the smaller object and leave the outer one with a hole.

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/CutTutorial2.png

Since this deletes the inner object, you should consider making a duplicate of it, and perform the operation with the duplicate.

== Simplify ==

Sometimes territories can contain way more data than they need. One example is after drawing territories with the pencil tool, if you view the vertices (F2) you'll see it has an excessive amount.

This is easy to fix simply by selecting Path -> Simplify (Ctrl+L). This reduces the number of vertices drastically, and in most cases, doesn't alter the appearance of the object at all:

https://d32kaghj56y4ei.cloudfront.net/static/img/Simplify.png

Not only does this make the object easier to work with and increase the performance of Inkscape, it also reduces the size of your resulting Warzone map which makes it load faster and allows you to fit more objects into your map.

== Path Division ==

One way of building Warzone maps is to divide larger areas into smaller territories with the path division operation. It can be used to divide a single region into two according to another path that defines the border between the new regions.

To split a region, you naturally first have to have drawn this region as a proper Inkscape path. Begin by drawing the desired border as a new path using, for example, the Pen tool. It does not matter if the path defining the border extends outside the territory you wish to split, as it disappears when this operation is complete.

After drawing the new border, select the region with the Selection tool, and then also simultaneously select the dividing path while pressing the Shift key. Then select the Division operation from the Path menu, or press its shortcut Ctrl+/. You now have two regions that you can modify separately, and perhaps split again to make smaller regions. It is a good idea to simplify the dividing path before doing this, as simplifying the two new regions afterwards separately usually changes their border shapes in different ways.

When splitting a large continent into bonus regions, you can make use of the Inset operation after making all the divisions. Using an inset of half a pixel (set by going to Inkscape Preferences and opening the Steps tab) on each of the bonus regions should make their borders appear adjacent in the recommended way. After defining all the bonus regions, no further insets are needed, as inside each bonus region the recommended way is to have the borders overlap. Because of this, the bonus regions and their insets should be done first when mapping a larger continent.

The '''Friends list''' (previously named invite list) is simply the list of players that you can choose to invite to a new WarLight game. By default, anyone you play a multi-player game with is automatically added to your friends list.

==Adding to your friends list==

You can add new players to your friends list by visiting their [[profile]] and clicking "Add to friends list". After doing this, they will show up when creating a new WarLight game.

If you're trying to invite a friend to your game, it's often much easier to simply bypass your friends list and invite them via their e-mail address. If you enter the e-mail address of their existing WarLight account, it functions identically to as if you had them on your friends list. If you enter an e-mail address that is not registered with an account, they will be sent an e-mail and can easily create an account.

==Viewing and removing from your friends list==

You can view and manage your friends list from the [http://warlight.net/ManageFriendList manage friends list] page located under the Settings tab.
http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/CombatBasicsAnimation.gif
</div>

The '''attack system''' is very simple. Each army that attacks has a 60% chance at killing one defending army. If all of the defending armies are killed, the territory is captured and all the attacking armies move to occupy the destination territory.

For example, if you attack with 10, you will kill, on average, 6 armies. This is why you generally want to attack with at least twice as many armies as the defender has.

Defenders also get an opportunity to kill attacking armies. Each defending army has a 70% chance at killing one of the attacking armies. The defender's kill roll does not impact whether or not the territory is captured.

Generally, you always want to have overwhelming numbers in every battle you participate in. Clearly, however, this isn't always possible, so you must pick and choose your fights to make the most effective use of your armies.

==Examples==

===Animation Example===

In the animation shown in the upper-right right, 7 armies are shown attacking a territory defended by 4 armies. Note the left territory had 8 armies to start with, but it can only attack with 7 since one army must remain on all territories.

Each of the 7 attacking armies has a 60% chance at killing one defending army. Each of the 4 defending armies has a 70% chance at killing one of the attacking armies.

In this case, the attackers killed 4 and the defenders killed 3 (represented by the four checkmarks on the left and the three checkmarks on the right). Since all of the defending armies died, the territory is captured by the attacker. 7 armies were attacking, and 3 were killed by the defenders, leaving 4 to occupy the newly captured territory.

===Another example===

Let's say that 15 armies attack a territory that has 6 armies.

The attacking 15 armies could have killed between 0 and 15, but on average they will kill 9 (60% of 15). Let's say they kill 9 armies.

The defenders could kill between 0 and 6 of the attacking 15 armies, but on average they will kill 4 or 5 (70% of 6). Let's say they kill 5 armies.

5 of the attacking armies die and all 6 of the defending armies die. Since all the defenders died, the remaining 10 attacking armies take control of the defending territory.

===Failed attack example===

Let's say that 25 armies attack a territory that has 20 armies.

The attacking 25 armies could have killed between 0 and 25, but on average they will kill 15 (60% of 25). Let's say they kill 15 armies.

The defenders could kill between 0 and 20 of the attacking 25 armies, but on average they will kill 14 (70% of 20). Let's say they also kill 15 armies.

15 of the attacking armies die and 15 of the defending armies die. Since 5 defenders lived, the territory is not captured. The remaining 10 attacking armies retreat back to their territory of origin.

==Analyze Graphs==

Within the game, WarLight supplies [[Analyze Graphs]]. These provide an easy way to understand the odds of any attack succeeding without needing to understand all of the math presented on this page.

==Analysis==

Calculating how many armies will be killed can be done with the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_probability binomial probability] formula. If we run this formula on 100 attacking armies, we get a bell curve like this:

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/BinomialDistribution.png

We can see that the most likely number of armies that will be killed by 100 attacking armies is 60, which will happen about 8% of the time. The standard deviation is approximately 4.3465 armies. The number killed will thus be between 55 and 65 armies 75% of the time.

==Luck Modifier==

The calculations on this page assume that the game's [[luck modifier]] is set to 100%. Most games use a lower value, which reduces the amount that randomness affects the game. To see how the this changes the calculations, see the [[Luck Modifier]].

==Overridden kill rates==

The default [[offense and defense kill rates]] are 60% and 70%, but these can be changed by game creators. Therefore, for multi-player games, it's a good idea to check the settings on your game to be sure.

This page shows how to create the basic elements of a Warlight map using Inkscape. If you are new to Inkscape then it is recommended that you read this!

== Setting Page Properties ==

Before you start drawing your map there a couple of things that need to be done.

To access page properties click 'File' then 'Document Properties'. A small tab should appear.

Firstly the background colour needs to be changed to black. This is necessary for all Warlight Maps. Just click the squared bar labelled 'Background' and change it to black.

Secondly the size of the document can be changed. The options for this are located on the bottom half of the page properties tab.

http://s18.postimg.org/goha70id5/Document_Properties.png

''Please note'' that you can change the page size later on without affecting your drawing. The max size for a Warlight map is 3330x2440. Also you can resize the document to fit the size of your drawing in the page properties tab as well.

== Inserting A Template Image ==

To make a map that is both accurate and looks great you may want to use a template of the place you’re making a map of.

You can upload a image to Inscape from your computer may clicking on 'File' then 'Import'. Double click the image and you’re done.

If a box appears asking to link or embed the image then select 'embed'.

http://s17.postimg.org/5d29ngw73/Image_Upload.png

You can resize the image the standard way, by dragging the corners and arrows presented.

== Creating A Territory ==

This section will show how to create a territory from start to finish.

First you must select the 'Draw Calligraphic Or Brush Strokes' tool from the left side bar, (the one that looks like a ball point pen with 2 white dots below it.)

http://s9.postimg.org/6g50tumu3/Pen.png

This tool will allow you to create straight lines and curves to form shape. Just click to form straight lines, hold to form curves.

Connect the end of the line to the start to create a shape.

If part of your shape is out of place then you do not have to redraw the whole thing! You can use the 'Edit Path By Nodes' tool located at the 2nd from top tool on the left hand side tool bar. Your shape will appear red showing every corner and node in the shape, you can drag the nodes to edit your shape.

http://s17.postimg.org/m8m007raz/Nodes.png

The final step of making a territory is to name it. Select the shape and go to 'Object' then 'Object Properties'. On click a small box will appear. The description, label and title do not affect the territory when uploading to Warlight. It is the Id that you need to change. Replace the text inside the Id box with Territory_ followed by a number. EG: Territory_34

To set the Id once changed click 'Set'.

''Please note'' you can change the colour settings and line thickness of a shape but Warlight will automatically change them to the map standard. To change these settings go to 'Object' then 'Fill And Stroke'.

== Creating A Bonus ==

Bonuses are made in a simular way to territories but it's much easier!

Please note when uploading to warlight you can add spaces to the name but the capitals and name must be the same. So BonusLink_EastEurope can be named on Warlight EastEurope or East Europe but not east europe or East europe.

== Inserting Text ==

Some warlight maps contain text, either for titles or to add effect to the map.

To add text just click the 'A' on the left hand tool bar.

http://s8.postimg.org/4xdo8f7i9/Text.png

When you choose where to place your text you can change its font type, size, boldness and italics at the top of your screen.

Like shapes then can be moved and edited at any time.

''Please note'' for text to appear when uploaded to Warlight it must be of a path type. To do this just select the text and go to 'Path' then 'Object To Path'. Job done.

== Unioning (1 Territory That Spans Over Several Shapes) ==

Sometimes a single territory is made up of several shapes! These need to be combined as a territory must be one shape only. Sometimes you can't just redraw them as they might not connect (EG: Nations with islands,) but who wants to redraw them anyway?

You can combine shapes easily by using the Union tool.

Select all shapes you want to combine (use the shift key or drag over all the shapes.) Once selected go to 'Path' then 'Union' and multiple have become one.

''Please note'' is one of the shapes you group has a Id of Territory_ you may get errors when uploading to Warlight.

== Fixing small territories ==

The union feature can also be used to ensure players can click on small territories. Take, for example, Baja from the Earth map. In its raw form, it's way too small to fit an army number or be clickable:

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/Baja1.png

To rectify this, we draw a circle on top of it:

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/Baja2.png

Then select both the new circle and the Baja territory behind it at the same time. Select Path -> Union, and observe the resulting territory:

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/Baja3.png

== Cutting holes  ==

Sometimes maps call for having territories inside of other territories or bonuses within territories, maybe even water. It may be logical to just make both territories and put the outer one behind the inner one, but this doesn't work since in WarLight player-controllable territories should never overlap. Instead, a hole should be cut in the bigger territory so the smaller one can persist in the hole.

To accomplish this, we use the Path -> Difference command. To begin, select both territories (the inner and outer one) at the same time using Shift+Click

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/CutTutorial1.png

Then select Path -> Difference. This will delete the smaller object and leave the outer one with a hole.

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/CutTutorial2.png

Since this deletes the inner object, you should consider making a duplicate of it, and perform the operation with the duplicate.

== Simplify ==

Sometimes territories can contain way more data than they need. One example is after drawing territories with the pencil tool, if you view the vertices (F2) you'll see it has an excessive amount.

This is easy to fix simply by selecting Path -> Simplify (Ctrl+L). This reduces the number of vertices drastically, and in most cases, doesn't alter the appearance of the object at all:

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/Simplify.png

Not only does this make the object easier to work with and increase the performance of Inkscape, it also reduces the size of your resulting WarLight map which makes it load faster and allows you to fit more objects into your map.

== Path Division ==

One way of building WarLight maps is to divide larger areas into smaller territories with the path division operation.

This page shows how to create the basic elements of a Warlight map using Inkscape. If you are new to Inkscape then it is recommended that you read this!

== Setting Page Properties ==

== Inserting A Template Image ==

== Creating A Territory ==

== Creating A Bonus ==

Bonuses are made in a simular way to territories but it's much easier!

Please note when uploading to warlight you can add spaces to the name but the capitals and name must be the same. So BonusLink_EastEurope can be named on Warlight EastEurope or East Europe but not east europe or East europe.

== Inserting Text ==

== Fixing small territories ==

== Cutting holes  ==

== Simplify ==

== Path Division ==

One way of building WarLight maps is to divide larger areas into smaller territories with the path division operation. It can be used to divide a single region into two according to another path that defines the border between the new regions.

This page gives an introduction for new players on the basic strategies that give you better chances at winning games.

==Getting started==

It's a good idea to play the first three [[single-player levels]] before jumping into multi-player. These will ensure you understand the basic idea behind [[bonuses]] and [[basic combat]], as these are necessary prerequisites to playing WarLight.

==[[Free-for-all games]]==

In games with lots of players, it's generally a good idea to try to avoid getting into a lot of battles with other players. If two players are fighting each other, and a third is growing unencumbered, the third player tends to win more often since the first two are depleting their armies against each other.

Remember, fighting between two players weakens both of them. Be careful who you pick a fight with - even if you end up winning the war, you may just be opening yourself up for conquest by an even stronger neighbor.

Of course, you can't win without fighting at all. Therefore, it's necessary to find a balance. The best wars are ones that you can win quickly, whereas the worst ones are wars that you either lose or go on for a long time.

==Heads-up games==

Games with only two entities (1v1s, 2v2s, etc.) work completely differently. In these games, breaking an opponent's bonus is just as good as (sometimes better than) taking a bonus yourself. Therefore, going on the offensive is usually a good decision.

==Basic Strategy Guide==

[http://warlight.net/Profile?p=1311326246 Warflowvet {Warlighter}] made a brief strategy guide for beginner players.

===Deployment===
# Always put the combined amount of picks that will be gotten by all players to avoid getting random picks
-example: in strategic 1v1, take 6 picks.
# Never pick in a wastelanded bonus for any reason, even to take another bonus first turn. it will handicap your spreading too much.
# Start by taking small bonuses, big ones might be tempting but they'll take longer to finish, so they aren't worth it.

===Spreading===
# Never try to take a bonus with a wasteland in it, you may want to take a territory in it to sabotage or travel to another bonus though.
# Spreading is about taking full bonuses, not individual territories. Some territories are not worth it.
# Exact success chance depends on luck settings, but attack 2 with 4 (100%) or 3 (75%, higher risk) and 4 with 7 usually.

===Fighting===
Most of fighting is about predicting your opponent's moves.
# Break enemy bonuses, you only need 1 territory in there for him not to receive bonus for it.
# Only attack if you think you will have more armies, preferably at least twice as many, as your opponent when the attack happens
# Sabotage enemy bonuses by taking a territory near them, threatening to break them
# Defend your bonuses by putting the right amount of armies on your borders, predicting sabotage, and guessing how many armies and where your opponent will choose to attack

Grzechooo:

If a player does not take their turn in a timely fashion, they can be booted out of the game so that the game can continue.

The game creator can set a "boot time" when creating the game that will determine how fast each player must take their turn to avoid getting booted. The boot time typically determines the pace of the game and how long a game will take to play.

==Types of Booting==

WarLight has three types of booting: vote-to-boot, direct-boot, and auto-boot. The game creator can specify different durations for each of these three.

===Direct boot===

If a player doesn't take their turn before the direct-boot time, they can be directly booted by any player.

===Automatic boot===

If a player doesn't take their turn before the automatic boot time, they are immediately booted from the game without requiring anybody to click the boot button.

===Vote-to-boot===

If a player doesn't take their turn before this time, players can vote to boot them. If all players that are still alive in the game vote, the player is booted.

In games with lots of players, it can be difficult to get everyone to vote, especially if the players don't know each other outside of the game. For these types of games, it's recommended to disable vote-to-boot.

It's also worth noting that, as players are eliminated, the game can eventually dwindle to the point where there are only two or three players remaining, at which time it becomes very easy to vote-to-boot. When this happens, the vote-to-boot time should be considered just as important as the direct-boot time.

==Banking Boot Times==

Banking boot times is a feature that gives more flexibility to players with the boot times. When banking boot times is enabled, whenever you take a turn under the boot time, you "bank" some of that time. You can then use this banked time to go over the boot time in subsequent turns. The game creator will configure what percentage of the difference that players bank.

This helps keep the boot time more fair. For example, if a player plays very quickly during the week, but not at all on weekends, they don't need to worry about becoming bootable on Sunday evening, even if the boot timer is set to 1 day. Conversely, a player who constantly waits a long time take every turn will become bootable much more easily.

Let's look at an example. For now, let's assume the game creator configured it to bank 100% of the time. If the boot time is set to 24 hours, and Sally takes her turn after 20 hours, she'll bank 4 hours. This means that, for the next turn, she could wait until 28 hours have passed before she'll become bootable. Any time she waits over 24 hours, she eats into her bank. So if she takes 27 hours on the next turn, she uses three of her banked hours and her bank is reduced to one hour.

You can always see how much time a player has banked by opening the nudge/boot dialog and clicking the "speed" link.

The game creator can configure what percentage of the difference is banked on each turn. For example, if the game creator sets the amount banked to 25%, then Sally would have only banked 1 hour instead of the 4 above.

Since banking boot times gives more leeway, it is recommended you use smaller boot times than you would without it. It's also worth noting that only your last ten turns are counted - this means that banked time expires after ten turns. This helps keeps banked time from spiraling out of control in long games.

Grzechooo:

[[CLOT]] is a framework that allows players to create their own automated ladders or tournaments. This page walks you through how to get started making your own.

== How it works ==

Fundamentally, CLOT is source code that powers a website. The website primarilly serves the following functions:
* Allows players to join and leave the CLOT
* Creates games between players who have signed up to the CLOT
* Determines and displays the state of the tournament or ladder (shows player's ladder ranks or draws a tournament bracket, for example)

The framework provided is only a skeleton that provides a very simple implementation of a ladder. It simply matches up players randomly, and gives out ranks based on who won the most games. It's expected you will modify this to implement your own system.

== Google App Engine ==

The framework provided is set up to work under Google App Engine (GAE). GAE is a great choice for the following reasons:

* All of the website components (database, logging, e-mail, cache, indexes, etc.) are all integrated into one package making setup and sharing of code easy.
* GAE takes care of deployment and scaling for you, making the site practically maintenance-free.
* It's free! As long as traffic doesn't get out of hand (which it shouldn't for a CLOT website), GAE doesn't charge anything.

If you don't want to use GAE, you can always port CLOT to your preferred hosting environment.

== Installation ==

This section shows you how to set up a CLOT website on your own computer so you can start developing your own.

# Download and install Python 2  (http://www.python.org/download/)
# Download and install Google App Engine SDK for Python (https://developers.google.com/appengine/downloads)
# Download CLOT from https://github.com/FizzerWL/CLOT (click the Zip button at the top and then extract it to a directory)
# Run the Google App Engine Launcher
# Select File -> Add Existing Application
# Enter the name of the directory you extracted CLOT to
# Select the app and click Run. Wait a moment as it starts.
# Click Browse to launch the website in your local browser.

That's it! You're up and running. Now you can play around with the website, crack open the code, and figure out how it all works.

== Understanding the Code ==

The most important file of the starter code is '''clot.py'''. This contains two key functions: '''createGames''' and '''setRanks'''.

'''createGames''' is called periodically to check for new games that need to be created. The sample provided just retrieves all players in the database, figures out who isn't currently in a game, and creates Strategic 1v1s randomly between them. You should replace this function with your own logic that determines what game settings and player configurations should be used.

'''setRanks''' is also called periodically to update each player's rank. The sample provided just counts how many wins each player has had and then gives players ranks based on their number of wins. This is the simplest ladder ranking algorithm, but you can plug your own in. If you're making a tournament, you might not need this function at all.

There's a '''templates''' subdirectory that defines all of the html that powers the website. '''base.html''' defines the overall look and feel of the site. It's a good idea to edit the <title> element here to give your site its own name.

There's a '''static''' subdirectory that defines files that never change. Here you can place things like images you want to host. You'll probably want to adjust the stylesheet here to give your site its own look and feel.

Another file to check out is '''urls.py'''. This defines how web addresses map to the different Python files. If you want to add a new page, this is where you'll do it.

'''cron.py''' is called every 6 hours. This is what calls createGames and setRanks, but it also does some other maintenance as it checks for games that have recently finished.

== Development Tips ==

* In the Google App Engine Launcher, there's a button named SDK Console. Under the SDK Console, you'll see the Datastore Viewer which lets you view and manipulate what's stored in the CLOT database.
* In the Google App Engine Launcher, there's a button named Logs. Click this to open up a window that shows information about what the app is doing. You can write to this log in the app by calling logging.info()
* test.py gives you a blank function that you can test code out in. You can activate it by hitting the "/test" page in your browser.
Hey,

Could it be possible to enable file upload here, and then move images from warlight.net to be hosted on the Wiki and be editable by users? Some of them could be made better, some are outdated (for example the image on [[Multi Attack]] looks as if it was taken on the "Retro Earth" ;) map). [[User:Matma Rex|Matma Rex]] <small>[[User talk:Matma Rex|talk]]</small> 11:53, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

I agree it should be enabled ideally, but I didn't want to deal with the extra backup and security work. I'll make a note to look at it at some point, but for now feel free to e-mail me images at fizzer@warlight.net and I'll upload them. The multi-attack page definitely needs work. == Help page ==
I noticed a few moments ago that there seems to be no help page at the moment. Do you think that this could be added somewhere to the Main Page like in a seperate section or a link to an article called "Articles that need creating or expanding" That someone who is familar with what a help topic might contain could create the page and help users.
Hi, I think we need to add some new layers to antispam. I suggest to add the following line (taken from [[mediawikiwiki:Manual:$wgSpamRegex|here]], if it maters):
<pre><nowiki>
:Yes, that could be good idea, but also be careful not to complicate it to the level no one will be able to read it. --[[User:Grzechooo|<span style="color:#ff8080;font-weight:bold;">Grzechooo</span>]] ([[User talk:Grzechooo|<span style="color:#ae0000;">drop a line</span>]]) 11:38, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

I put ReCaptcha in place a couple days ago. I know all captchas have been broken but hopefully it's good enough. If it's not, I have a backup plan. [[User:Fizzer|Fizzer]]

----

If I might add anything. I have found three anti-spam techniques to work great:
* good CAPTCHA (which, however, is annoying to users)
* good anti-spam service (I personally love sblam.com, but any will do; this, however, might put some strain on the servers)
* and the best and simplest one: a hidden field during registration/editing, which the user should ''not'' fill.

The field just has to be clearly labeled for users as a fake (for text browsers, or the blind), clearly labelled to bots as real (a name attribute just like a real one from the form; change the real one's name to something else and fix up the code in backend accordingly), and I found it to stop 100% of spam. There are only two flaws: you have to implement this yourself (so it's different than anything else and "pstandard" spambots aren't able to bypass it - somebody would have to target the attack precisely at you, which is not really profitable unless you are Facebook or something), and it might theoretically annoy real users who use some kind of automatic form-filler (although any reasonably well-made one should ignore hidden fields; the non-filling of some fields is still IMO less annoying than CAPTCHA). [[User:Matma Rex|Matma Rex]] <small>[[User talk:Matma Rex|talk]]</small> 20:58, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

That's an interesting idea. I was also thinking about just making a custom CAPTCHA, as simple as "Enter the string 'foo'". It would be even simpler for new users, since that would be easier than ReCaptcha, and since it's custom I doubt any of the spambots would work without them making a custom handler for WarLight which is unlikely. [[User:Fizzer|Fizzer]]

== Protection? ==

Hi, why did you protect [[Map Making]]? [[User:Matma Rex|Matma Rex]] <small>[[User talk:Matma Rex|talk]]</small> 20:45, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Some people did nieve edits a couple times, such as inserting "Download Inkscape" as the first step in the overview. This isn't really appropriate for an overview, since it leads people to believe that Inkscape was required when it's just one option. [[User:Fizzer|Fizzer]]

== Map guidelines ==

Did you mean to remove the two sections in this edit? [http://wiki.warlight.net/index.php?title=Map_guidelines&diff=1497&oldid=prev]

They are quite obvious, but IMO it would be better if they were there, for clarity. [[User:Matma Rex|Matma Rex]] <small>[[User talk:Matma Rex|talk]]</small> 13:29, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

[[Map guidelines]] enumerates things that are nice to have, but aren't required. [[Map requirements]] lists the things that maps '''must''' do. Those two items were listed in both, so I removed them from guidelines to make it clear that they're not optional. [[User:Fizzer|Fizzer]]
==Questions==

Fizzer, why was the wiki page on UNBEATEN deleted? You said that it was not possible to challenge everyone and win, but why should they have too win? I was merely posting factual information and intended to update it when the challenges finished.

== Nations cup ==

Hey Fizzer,
I'm one of the people who were working on the [[Nations Cup]] pages before you deleted them all. I understand you're not comfortable with adding pages on tournaments to the main namespace, but would it be all right to host this kind of thing on our user pages instead? And can you restore the history for the deleted pages so that we can at least copy the code somewhere else. It's really frustrating to have hours of work deleted without any sort of warning at all. Thanks.
[[User:Aziridine|Aziridine]] ([[User talk:Aziridine|talk]]) 21:06, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for deleting them, but in all fairness, the wiki policy does state that you're supposed to ask permission before adding player-driven events. I saved a copy before deleting them, you can get it all here: http://pastebin.com/K4za4jRz

Honestly this is way too much data for the wiki, and is data that changes too frequently. You should host this on a third-party site -- there are lots of free web hosting options available, let me know if you need help with that. [[User:Fizzer|Fizzer]] ([[User talk:Fizzer|talk]])

:Thanks for the response and for saving those pages. I was totally unaware of this policy until you pointed it out - the main page just says "Contributions are welcome!" We'll try elsewhere. Hello, I've recently seen some new spam crop up. I believe the current spam regex needs to be tweaked a bit. Add something like this:
''Great map, although it suffers from some imbalance problems. Over all still very enjoyable and one of the classic maps on the site. 5/5''
''It's not as balanced as Medium Earth, but it allows for different strategies and longer gameplay. Recommended more for FFAs than 1v1 or team games.''

This page will teach you how you can make your very own WarLight map! For even more help, see [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az62ZVRiNaQ this video].

== Overview ==

Creating a WarLight map is a four-step process. See the links below for instructions on how to accomplish each of these steps.

# Create your SVG file (defines what the map looks like)
# Enter the details (connections, [[bonuses]], etc.)
# Test the map (play games on it to ensure it works correctly)
# Mark the map as public (allows the public to play your map)

== Required Reading ==
The '''GetAPIToken API''' is used to retrieve the API token for your account. The API token is required to call any of the other WarLight APIs.

The easiest way to get your API token is to simply access http://warlight.net/API/GetAPIToken in your browser while signed into WarLight. From here, copy the API token out of the returned JSON and use it in your application for other API requests.

The API token won't ever expire automatically. The only thing that stops an API token from working is if you change your WarLight account password. This will re-randomize your token. If you change your password, you should call GetAPIToken again to get the new one.

Every WarLight account has a unique API token. You should not reveal this token to other players - treat it as you would treat your password. If you ever suspect someone has learned your token, you should immediately change your WarLight account password to invalidate the token.

If you want to get your API Token programmatically using your password, you can POST your e-mail address and password to this page in the format Email=your@email.com&Password=yourpassword

WarLight uses an ELO rating system, similar to what is used in Chess.

==How Ranks and Ratings are calculated==

More specifically, WarLight uses Bayesian Elo Rating, which has several advantages over other ELO rating systems:
* Beating the same opponent multiple times gives you more rating than beating them once. In most ELO systems, only a win or loss is considered for each opponent.
* This system allows giving an advantage to players that pick first, as described above.
* Bayeselo behaves correctly when opponents' ratings are far apart
* Ratings are calculated based on final ratings, not just what the rating was when the game took place.

The exact algorithm used by this tool is documented on their page, and is not repeated here. The source code is also available for the truly nerdy.

==Run your own Ladder Simulations==

You can run your own ladder simulations which help to understand how the ratings are calculated. This can be used to answer questions like:

* How would the ratings be different if I had won versus X instead of lost?
* How would the ratings change if I win or lose this in-progress game?
* How would the ratings be different if first-pick advantage was higher or lower?

Here’s the process to re-produce the current rankings:

* Download Bayeselo.exe from [http://remi.coulom.free.fr/Bayesian-Elo/ remi.coulom.free.fr].
* Download BayeseloLog.txt from the links below. This file is automatically generated each time the ladder updates and contains all of the commands needed to re-produce the current ladder rankings.
* Run Bayeselo.exe. You’ll be left at a prompt that says
ResultSet>

* Copy the entire contents of BayeseloLog.txt to your clipboard, and paste it into the Bayeselo application. (Note: To paste into a console app on windows, you can right-click on the titlebar, select Edit then Paste)

BayeseloLog can be obtained separately for each ladder. Here are the links:

* [[1v1 ladder]]: http://warlightdata.s3.amazonaws.com/Data/BayeseloLog0.txt
* [[2v2 ladder]]: http://warlightdata.s3.amazonaws.com/Data/BayeseloLog1.txt
* [[Seasonal Ladder|Seasonal ladder]]:
** Visit [http://warlight.net/Ladder.aspx?Ladder=Seasonal this page] to get the list of seasons
** Click the season you want the log for
** Check your URL, and you'll see it ends with ID= and a number. For example, Season I is ID=4000
** Enter that number into this URL: http://warlightdata.s3.amazonaws.com/Data/BayeseloLog4000.txt

This will produce rankings like the following:

Rank Name Elo + - games score oppo. draws
...

==Making changes==

Now that you can re-produce the existing ladder rankings, you can try making changes and seeing how they affect the results. Here’s the process:

* First, ensure you are on the “ResultSet>” prompt. If you’re in “ResultSet-EloRating>”, enter a command of just “x” to go back up one.
* Enter the command “reset” to clear the previous results. This ensures you’re starting from a clean slate.
* Modify BayeseloLog.txt depending on what you want to try (see below).
* Copy/paste the modified BayeseloLog.txt back into Bayeselo.exe to see the results. Compare to your previous run to see how they changed.

== Modifying the log ==

In BayeseloLog.txt, you’ll find two large sections – first, a bunch of addplayer commands, then a bunch of addresult commands.

===Players===

Each addplayer line corresponds to a player participating (or that has participated at one time) in the ladder. They are also numbered, starting at zero and going up.

addplayer Fizzer ;0
addplayer Knoebber ;1
addplayer FBGDragons ;2
addplayer CuChulainn ;3
...
addplayer Perrin3088 ;7
...

===Results===

After the players, there are a bunch of addresult commands. Each addresult corresponds to one finished ladder game. In these numbers, we tell Bayeselo which two players fought each other, who got first pick, and who won. Let's examine this in detail.

addresult 0 7 2
addresult 1 4 2
addresult 2 7 2
addresult 3 7 0
addresult 4 18 0
...

http://s3cdn.warlight.net/static/img/addresult.png

By changing these, you can simulate new wins/losses or change existing games to see how they would affect the results.

Grzechooo: /* Non-Seasonal Ladders */

This page describes how ladder games are created. This process is the same for the [[1 v 1 Ladder]] and the [[2 v 2 Ladder]], however it differs for the [[seasonal ladder]].

== Non-Seasonal Ladders ==

Every time the ladder updates, it checks for new games to create. The ladder tries to match you against players near your rating, while also preventing you from facing the same people over and over.

The rest of this section describes the how the game-creation algorithm works for the nerds out there that want to follow along.

# The algorithm starts by taking a list of all players who are participating in the ladder in order of their rating. It enumerates through them starting with the highest rated player and moving downwards.
# For each player, WarLight constructs a list of potential opponents. We start by populating the list with everyone within 30% of you on the ladder or 10 players/teams on either side. For example, if the ladder has 100 players in it, we would look at the 30 players with better ratings than you and the 30 players with worse ratings than you (the game creation algorithm only sorts by rating - it ignores rank).
# Then, we count how many times you've played each remaining opponent, and take the median of this data set. We eliminate any opponents that we've played more than this median, since the ladder wants to simultaneously try and pair you with unplayed (or fewer played) opponents as much as possible, without getting too restrictive and stagnating your new games if you're waiting on some slow players.
# Next, we eliminate any opponents that are already in their maximum number of games, based on how many games they specified they wanted to play in when they joined the ladder.
# Next, we eliminate any opponents that you've played with in your last 3 games in order of creation, and also eliminate any opponents that were in your last finished game for this ladder, and also eliminate any opponents we're currently playing with in this ladder. From this trimmed down list, we pick the highest rated player who meets this same criteria to you and create a game between you and them.

== Seasonal Ladders ==

Seasonal ladders check for creating new games once per day, until 13 days before the season ends at which point no new games will be created.

This check usually happens just after midnight in the GMT timezone. When it occurs, WarLight follows the following process to determine how games are created:

# Determine how many games each player should have at this point. This is calculated by taking the number of days we are into the season, dividing by 4, then adding 4. This matches the goal of having 4 games at the start, and one more game every 4 days after that.
# Each player that doesn't have enough games gets a new game. Their opponent is determined randomly from opponents that they have not played. WarLight will try to pick an opponent who has few games (and therefore needs more), but if none are available it will still create a game, putting that player above the normal limit.

WarLight ladders are competitive arenas where players compete for the highest spot on the ladder.

You can find the main ladder pages by clicking the Ladders sub-tab under the Community tab. This is where players can join or leave the ladder, or see the up-to-date standings.

==Ladders==
WarLight currently has three ladders:

* The [[1 v 1 Ladder]].
* The [[2 v 2 Ladder]].
* The [[Seasonal Ladder]].

==How Ladders Work==

In the WarLight ladders, you don't get to choose who you play against. Instead, the ladder sets up games for you. You can, however, pick how many games you'd like to be playing at any given time.

The ladder updates once every other hour starting at midnight GMT, then 2am GMT, 4am GMT, etc. Each update, it updates ratings and rankings of all players and creates new ladder games.

WarLight ladders use an ELO rating system, similar to what is used in professional Chess tournaments, to rank players by their skill level. Based on the results of your ladder games, you will receive a rating that will be used to give you a rank on the ladder's scoreboard.

Your rating will change based on the results of other player's games, too. For example, if you beat a player who ends up becoming the #1 player, you get the full results of beating the #1 player even if they were not #1 when you beat them.

Players must complete a certain number of ladder games before they are given a rank: 15 in the 1v1 ladder, 10 in the 2v2 ladder, and 5 in the seasonal ladder.

Only members can join ladders, however anyone can view all of the ratings and ladder games on the website.

==Leaving the Ladder==

Players are free to leave the ladder and re-join it at any time with no penalty. Leaving the ladder does not delete any on-going games, it just stops new games from being created for you. Your rating continues to be updated even when you’re not participating in the ladder. However, you will not receive a rank while not in the ladder and, therefore, won’t be included on the leaderboard. This is done to ensure high-ranking players have to actively defend their high ranks, and can’t just get into the #1 spot and squat on it. If you re-join the ladder, your existing rating will be used to rank you just as it was before you left. This makes it easy to take breaks in case you’re going to be away from WarLight for a while.

==Automatic Booting==

In Ladder games, WarLight uses the [[auto boot]] feature to automatically boot any players who do not move for more than 72 hours (3 days). This helps keep the ladder fair and balanced for all players. Without automating booting, players with their finger on the boot button would, over time, have an edge in the ratings over players who give their opponents extra leeway. Automatic booting takes booting out of the equation, and ensures ratings are determined the same way for everyone. This also prevents games from stagnating which can clog up the ladder and prevent players from advancing as fast through the ladder as they'd like.

==Slight Advantage for First Pick==

In Chess, it's advantageous to play as the player playing white, since the white player goes first. Similarly, in manual distribution WarLight games, it's advantageous to get first pick. That is, if two players pick the same territory as their #1 choice, the randomly decided player with first pick will get the territory and the other player will get their #2 choice.

To counteract this, WarLight gives a slight ratings advantage to the player who gets first pick in ladder games, similar to how some ELO systems give a ratings advantage to the player playing white. In Chess, the advantage is estimated to be worth about 33 points, whereas in WarLight the advantage is only 10 points.

Only the [[1 v 1 ladder]] and the [[2 v 2 ladder]] give an advantage for first pick. The [[seasonal ladder]] does not.

==Expiration of Old Games==

Games in the [[1 v 1 ladder]] and [[2 v 2 ladder]] will expire after a few months. Once they're expired, they no longer count towards your rankings. Games in the [[1 v 1 Ladder]] expire after two months, and games in the [[2 v 2 Ladder]] expire after 5 months. This date is calculated from the date the game ends, not the day it starts.

Games in the [[seasonal ladder]] never expire, but they only apply to the current season.

Expiring old games keeps the ladder fresh and ensures that ratings don't inflate over time. ELO rating systems are zero-sum systems, meaning that each player that joins the ladder brings new points into the mix. See [[wikipedia:Elo rating system#Ratings_inflation_and_deflation|Ratings Inflation and Deflation]] for a more detailed analysis.
