General Arun: Added basic strategy guide by Warflowvet

This page gives an introduction for new players on the basic strategies that give you better chances at winning games.

Getting started
It's a good idea to play the first three single-player levels before jumping into multi-player. These will ensure you understand the basic idea behind bonuses and basic combat, as these are necessary prerequisites to playing WarLight.

Free-for-all games
In games with lots of players, it's generally a good idea to try to avoid getting into a lot of battles with other players. If two players are fighting each other, and a third is growing unencumbered, the third player tends to win more often since the first two are depleting their armies against each other.

Remember, fighting between two players weakens both of them. Be careful who you pick a fight with - even if you end up winning the war, you may just be opening yourself up for conquest by an even stronger neighbor.

Of course, you can't win without fighting at all. Therefore, it's necessary to find a balance. The best wars are ones that you can win quickly, whereas the worst ones are wars that you either lose or go on for a long time.

Heads-up games
Games with only two entities (1v1s, 2v2s, etc.) work completely differently. In these games, breaking an opponent's bonus is just as good as (sometimes better than) taking a bonus yourself. Therefore, going on the offensive is usually a good decision.

Basic Strategy Guide
Warflowvet {Warlighter made a brief strategy guide for beginner players.

Deployment
1)Always put the combined amount of picks that will be gotten by all players to avoid getting random picks
-example: in strategic 1V1, take 6 picks.
2)Never pick in a wastelanded bonus for any reason, even to take another bonus first turn. it will handicap your spreading too much.
3)Start by taking small bonuses, big ones might be tempting but they'll take a lot longer, so are not worth it.

Spreading
1)Never try to take a bonus with a wasteland in it, you may want to take a territory in it to sabotage or travel to another bonus though.
2)Spreading is about taking full bonuses, not individual territories. Some territories are not worth it.
3)Exact success chance depends on luck settings, but attack 2 with 4 or 3 (higher risk) and 4 with 7 usually.

Fighting
Most of fighting is about predicting your opponent's moves
1) Break enemy bonuses, you only need 1 territory in there for him not to have it.
2) Only attack if you think you will have more armies, preferably at least twice as many, as your opponent when the attack happens
3)Sabotage enemy bonuses by taking a territory near them, threatening to break them
4)Defend your bonuses by putting the right amount of armies on your borders, predicting sabotage, and guessing how many armies and where your opponent will choose to attack

Modes
The reinforcement card supports two modes: fixed and progressive.

Fixed
Fixed Reinforcement Cards are simple: play one to be given a specific number of extra armies to deploy that turn. Each card is always worth the same amount.

Progressive
When the Reinforcement Card is set to the progressive setting, it gives a varying number of armies. Typically, you want your Reinforcement Cards to give fewer armies at the start of a game to keep them from being too powerful, and more armies as players accumulate larger incomes to keep the cards from becoming worthless.

It's important to note that the value of the card is determined when you receive it (or when it is made whole) rather than when the card is played.

The card increases either by turn number or by territories held:

Progressive By Turn Number
A Reinforcement Card that progresses by turn number will simply multiply the number of turns that have passed in the game (seen in the upper-left corner of the game screen) by the defined percentage.

The advantages to using this method are that players cannot learn anything about a game that they otherwise could not know and that it is easy to calculate ahead of time how much your cards will be worth.

The disadvantage to using this method is that cards are unbounded; they will continue growing in value forever. In long games, this tends to decrease the fun as cards become the key component to winning and bonuses grow obsolete.

Progressive By Territories Held
A Reinforcement Card that progresses by territories held will multiply the total number of territories held by all players on the entire map by the defined percentage. This is designed for games that start mostly filled with neutrals as it will allow the cards to grow along with the game.

The advantages of using this method are that the cards will stop growing in value once the world is fully taken. This allows the card significance to, more often than not, stay in sync with the pace of the game and keep from getting out of control.

The disadvantages of using this method are that clever players can use the value to calculate how much of the world has been taken over in a fog game. This typically is not very valuable information, so this does not usually harm the game.

Remainders
In the event of a remainder in these calculations, the value will be rounded to the nearest whole number. A remainder of 0.5 will round up.
You can Only Deploy Base Income Armies to a Base. From there, transfer them wherever you need to.

First Base: This is your starting spot. You can always deploy armies here, and this will be the only spot for the first several turns that you should deploy armies to.

New Bases: You can also deploy armies adjacent to any neutral of 20 value or greater. Create a base by blockading 10 armies.

Taking over a Base: You can use bases created by your enemy as long as at least 20 neutral armies remain in the blockade.

Destroying a Base. If the blockade is weakend to less than 20 neutrals the base is destroyed and cannot deploy armies for anyone.

Reinf Cards: These are the only armies that can be deployed away from a base. One Card per Territory. Do not Split or apply more than one card to a territory.

Create This Variant on any map by making a 2.0 blockade card.

Multi-player
All multi-player WarLight games take place on the WarLight server. This means that it's not possible for players to give themselves additional armies, manipulate attacks, or do anything outside the normal rules of the game.

Further, the WarLight server never shares private information with the client. For example, information about fogged territories is filtered out on the server before it is sent to the player's browser, so trying to inspect the data-stream between the server and client won't reveal anything that would give a player an advantage in a game.

As WarLight is a competitive game, it's important that cheating never be possible in multi-player games or it would compromise things like tournaments and ladders.

Single-player
Single-player games take place in the player's browser. This means it is possible for players to hack their client to give themselves additional armies, to spy through the fog, or really to do anything they want. Of course, as the game is single-player, they're really only cheating themselves out of the fun of defeating the AI within the game's normal constraints.

The fact that it is possible to cheat in single-player is the reason that no global leader-boards exist for the single-player levels. If global leader-boards were added, given sufficient time, they would eventually just resort to being a list of the top cheaters. This isn't fun for anyone, as it diminishes the value of the players playing legitimately. Not having global leader-boards reduces the urge for anyone to cheat, since their spoils would only be visible to players who happen to look at their profile.

Anyone who posts instructions on how to cheat at single player games on WarLight.net (including the wiki) will find their post deleted.
Done. Maybe we should also upgrade to a stronger captcha? Fizzer
:Yes, that could be good idea, but also be careful not to complicate it to the level no one will be able to read it. --<span style="color:#ff8080;font-weight:bold;">Grzechooo</span> (<span style="color:#ae0000;">drop a line</span>) 11:38, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
I put ReCaptcha in place a couple days ago. I know all captchas have been broken but hopefully it's good enough. If it's not, I have a backup plan. Fizzer

----

If I might add anything. I have found three anti-spam techniques to work great:
* good CAPTCHA (which, however, is annoying to users)
* good anti-spam service (I personally love sblam.com, but any will do; this, however, might put some strain on the servers)
* and the best and simplest one: a hidden field during registration/editing, which the user should not fill.

The field just has to be clearly labeled for users as a fake (for text browsers, or the blind), clearly labelled to bots as real (a name attribute just like a real one from the form; change the real one's name to something else and fix up the code in backend accordingly), and I found it to stop 100% of spam. There are only two flaws: you have to implement this yourself (so it's different than anything else and "pstandard" spambots aren't able to bypass it - somebody would have to target the attack precisely at you, which is not really profitable unless you are Facebook or something), and it might theoretically annoy real users who use some kind of automatic form-filler (although any reasonably well-made one should ignore hidden fields; the non-filling of some fields is still IMO less annoying than CAPTCHA). Matma Rex <small>talk</small> 20:58, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

That's an interesting idea. I was also thinking about just making a custom CAPTCHA, as simple as "Enter the string 'foo'". It would be even simpler for new users, since that would be easier than ReCaptcha, and since it's custom I doubt any of the spambots would work without them making a custom handler for WarLight which is unlikely. == Protection? ==

Hi, why did you protect Map Making? Matma Rex <small>talk</small> 20:45, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Some people did nieve edits a couple times, such as inserting "Download Inkscape" as the first step in the overview. This isn't really appropriate for an overview, since it leads people to believe that Inkscape was required when it's just one option. Fizzer

Map guidelines
Did you mean to remove the two sections in this edit?

They are quite obvious, but IMO it would be better if they were there, for clarity. Matma Rex <small>talk</small> 13:29, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Map guidelines enumerates things that are nice to have, but aren't required. Map requirements lists the things that maps must do. Those two items were listed in both, so I removed them from guidelines to make it clear that they're not optional. Fizzer

Ah. Silly me. Matma Rex <small>talk</small> 12:02, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
Questions
Fizzer, why was the wiki page on UNBEATEN deleted? You said that it was not possible to challenge everyone and win, but why should they have too win? I was merely posting factual information and intended to update it when the challenges finished.
